I've gone to this place since I came to NYC for college in 1999 and it's great. I've always enjoyed the atmosphere, the poets, and the people. Recently, I've been turned off by the pretentiousness of some of the folk that work there. Yes, this is a cool, chill place but it's supposed to be welcoming to all, right? It was sort of upsetting to me that the Nuyorican has some sort of exclusiveness now. Alas, a little pretentious 'tude won't turn me off because I am all about supporting the poets and the community that the Nuyorican still stands for!

Middlesex...an appropriate name, because, well, I'm in the middle on this one. I had been wanting to try this bar for awhile on a weekend night, mostly just to figure out a valid reason why there's always a line stretching past Miracle of Science by 10:30. I went here with coworkers once back when it first opened and we vetoed it right away - a completely bare room with a few benches on wheels, not exactly the happy hour scene. But that was waaaay back in early 2005! Things have changed. My friends and I arrived at 9:30 and the bar was already crowded. I guess everyone has the idea to get there early to avoid the line, which was at a ridiculous length by the time 10:30 rolled around. We grabbed whatever seats we could and ordered drinks. As far as the layout goes, I like the chic minimalist approach, but not when it comes to service - the waitress was attentive and prompt for the first hour, but when the room filled up, she basically disappeared. 2 waitresses for 9 million people who are constantly moving the tables? Doesn't make much sense to me, but props to them for trying to keep up. I also really liked the music...the night started off with a mix of hip-hop/reggae, and then switched to 80's/classics remixes. The benefit of the furniture on wheels is that you can basically make whatever section you are in conducive to what you want to do - you want to dance? Roll the bench out of the way. Not only was the line to get in a little much, the line to the bathroom was SO LONG. But, the bathrooms were clean, so I can't complain too much. I give Middlesex 4 stars for the hip lounge atmosphere, the music, and the overall good time I had there. But by midnight, I was overwhelmed by the crowds of people waiting for drinks and the bathroom, mixed in with out of control dancers, that I just couldn't take it anymore.
