by Aviva S. on Maybe we had a brand new waiter, but this poor guy was all thumbs. He had a very awkward way about him, and made a very big deal of explaining that substituting sides, or refilling my diet coke would cost extra. The first time we said "yes, that's fine" should have taken care of it - but he provided this warning several times. Though - charging for a soda refill? really? That said - the brussel sprouts were fantastic. The muscles, not so much.
by Karyn Percey on I don't know how I managed to live in SF so long without ever coming here. I had heard really great things from friends and yet, it took me 6 years to make it over to this bar. I went and heard some music last night that sounded a lot like Mexican Surf Rock (if there is such a genre). It wasn't overcrowded, the bartenders were friendly. The outdoor patio had plenty of seating and the tunes were great. The crowd was rockabilly but that might change according to the music that's playing. Lots of cowboy hats, western shirts and all around Marlboro-men to be seen. Here's the thing. I took my bf who is NOTORIOUSLY anti-bar. He's so anti-bar that it makes it particularly challenging for me, the pro-bar gf. There are only a handful of bars that he can tolerate without getting frustrated and saying that he's over it and wants to go home after about 30 minutes. So it is with great pride that I announce that El Rio won my bf's stamp of approval. About an hour into enjoying tasty margaritas and groovy tunes on their great back patio, he leans over and says, "hey, um, we should come here more often." SUCCESSSSSSSS! This just might be my new favorite bar.
