by Dalena H. on My friend suggested Vegan Village as a nice spot to study for the afternoon. When we arrived, instead of the cafe with haphazard seating I was expecting, there were white clothed tables, with jazz playing. The waiters were all friendly and approachable and service was timely and courteous. I ordered the soy round ground tacos, which were oily but tasty, very tasty in fact, and the vanilla cream cake which I shared with my friend. Everything on the menu is vegan, and the cakes are made in house. They let us study for several hours without interruption and the space serves as a club and community meeting space.
by Claude Petronis on An old-time favorite, mostly due to Frank (the owner) whom I have known for almost 25 years since I first landed in downtown SF with no money in my pockets, and no better place to stay than the "Warfield Hotel" right above this dive. If you always wanted to hide from all your other friends for a cheap drink or beer, this is the joint. Dont be shy - speak with the guy next to you, or pretend at least, while he tells you all about being out of the joint again...or watch the latest, yet always same scene, on the busiest corner in town: Turk and Taylor. You wont regret a thing!
