I really wanted to like this place, and we've given them several chances to get it right. Unfortunately, the good food and drinks aren't enough to make up for the horrible service we've had several times now at brunch time. One waiter didn't put in my husband's order until after he had delivered my order to the table. Thus, I ended up eating while hubby waited for his order to arrive. I like to order the Bay Breeze Bellini (which is printed on their drink menu) - a wonderful drink, which stymies the waitstaff there every time. I usually end up with either a Bay Breeze OR a bellini. People. It's ON YOUR MENU. One waiter had to borrow a pen from me since he came to our table without one. I jokingly offered him one and he shamefacedly took me up on it, rather than running to get one quickly. This was after we'd explained to him that we were hoping for a good experience since our last time there had been not so good. The same guy (who used said pen to write down our orders) confused my order sometime in the 10 feet between our table and the computer, so I ended up with nachos instead of quesadillas. Not a big deal, except I'm allergic to corn (which I told the waiter) and the nachos are, of course, made with corn chips. Our drink orders were messed up multiple times (we ordered one drink each), and overall, the waiter required way too much hand-holding for a relaxing meal. The manager brought out my correct order (finally) and when I told him about the pen, he looked mortified. Later, my pen was presented back to me with an apology. To his credit, the manager comped the entire check, and without warning, brought us flan (which had corn starch in it...sigh). As we were picking at dessert, they tried to deliver chips and salsa to our table. Sigh. The manager gave us a card for a free meal the next time we went, so we gave it one more shot. The waitress didn't know about the Bay Breeze Bellini and apparently didn't bother to ask the bartender. Instead, she argued with me about such a drink existing, until I pointed it out to her on the menu. The manager (a different guy than before) quickly intervened, since he knew we'd had a bad experience before. Our service was OK, but part of that was the manager hovering around nervously. All in all, we really like the food and the decor, but with so much good Mexican food/bevs in town, why put ourselves through the hassle of eating here?

Middlesex is a delicate beast for this fickle creature. Sometimes I love it. Sometimes I just like it. Sometimes I want to move all the wheeled benches around and put on a show, sometimes I want to sit in the corner and stare out at the snow or people waiting in line in the snow. Sometimes I (drunkenly "don't") think it's a great idea to say that I work there- in hopes to skip the line (which never works) even though there is a secret passage. I am not really into forever running da dum dum da da dum dum dee beats re: Hearthrob. But, I think that's just because I am crossing the bridge into oldville. I do love Soul nights- which maybe confirms? that I have crossed the bridge into oldville (although, the music I've heard- though great, has been a little too brassy & scratchy for their systems to properly handle and to a soul music snob such as myself: only my play list would do). I think it's a great space. And I love that they permit art (social) shows such as "Disgustingly Trendy" and "Fresh". I also love to go there starving & hungry and decide that drinking margarita's with salt is the equivalent to eating nachos. But that's just me.

Nice place.  Cool underground vibe.  go there when some show or event sounds interesting to you.  Great interior.  A SF treasure.  Incredible beer selection!  Nice doormen.  Intimate, cozy.  Feels a little gothy.  Depends on the event I guess.  Just a cool place to be.
