by Swing C. on CLOSED! Coda Jazz Supper Club, 1710 Mission Street (Telephone: 551-CODA) Downbeat isn't before nine o'clock or so so you can have an early dinner if you're not interested in the music. And I highly recommend that you do! We've been enjoying the preparations of Executive Chef Christopher Pastena for many years. He was the cook at Bruno's on Mission Street for several years before it became a hamburger joint. His preparations at Coda http://codalive.com/Fo...are imaginative and delicious. We've had the Coffee Crusted Pork Loin and several other dishes. Each has been excellent. We do not often order steak in restaurants in the belief that if you cannot prepare a decent steak at home, you oughtn't have a kitchen. Read carefully: Tonight's Random Rubbed Grilled Ribeye Steak was THE TASTIEST STEAK I'VE EVER HAD! Yes, ever! No, not the best piece of meat (had that in Buenos Aires) but the tastiest. The appetizers and side dishes we've had have been excellent. Other diners have concurred with our opinion. This is a very good place to eat. by Tommie Formby on I was lucky enough to know the promoter personally and so I spared myself the embarrassment of waiting in line. A quick note, most of the people waiting in line were only "average" looking. Once inside I was greeted with a modern asian lounge complete with a full wall of candles and two bars. The place was much smaller then I thought but the bouncers kept the club from getting too packed. This is definitely not a social club as most people were very cliquish and viciously guarded their tables. The DJ was pure shit and played songs for about fifteen seconds before jumping to the next. If dancing is your forte then skip this place. Overall I wasn't impressed but the bouncers were friendlier then I have read here.
by Justine L. on While not every single event held there is my cup of tea, the DNA is a great venue. Bootie and PopRocks are my personal favorite clubs that are held here. The drinks are strong and the staff rocks. Specifically Chupa is probably the hottest, fastest, flat-out best bartender in the city. When I go out I love to dance, and for that the DNA is definitely the place, it's spacious and airy not like the stuffy hot crowded dance floors I usually find myself suffocating in. And if it is really crowded or I'm rockin out ridiculously hard and start to overheat they have Ins and Outs unlike many dance clubs. So you can step out and get some fresh air. With a big downstairs dance floor and another smaller one upstairs you can also switch locations if the musics not moving you. The DNA definitely tends to cater to an alternative crowd which I for one consider a plus. You can go there most nights and not deal with skeezy guys trying to pick you up left and right. They have beautiful Go Go dancers of all shapes and sizes which is also awesome. They also have free Internet kiosks so if for some reason you need to check your myspace or write a drunken blog in the middle of the night you can. The upstairs balcony area makes for great people watching. All that being said go now to the DNA.
