I walked in and was immediately confused. I realized that I had been here before, and the last time I was here (2-3 yrs ago) it was a pretty mediocre Italian place. Luckily, it's now a pizza joint, and a pretty good one at that. My good friend had her birthday dinner here a few weeks ago, and I give mad props to whomever planned it to start at 5, right when they open. It just so happened to coincide with their happy hour, which means half-price pizza until 7! I split a very tasty margherita pizza with a friend, which brought my total to a whopping $4 for 4 slices. I nearly always leave the crust, because it never tastes very good and it's a waste of carbs. I even wrote a poem about it in third grade--all I can remember is the first line, "I hate crust; it leaves me in disgust". Yeah, lame. Anyway, I gobbled the crust right up- it has a yummy garlicky tinge to it, reminiscent of breadsticks. My only complaint was that they would not split the bill ($270+) and there were at least 15 of us. It took nearly 30 minutes for us to figure out our totals plus tip, and that's never fun. In fact, sometimes I outright avoid birthday dinners because some places don't split tickets--it has been known to cause hurt feelings and arguments among friends on what is supposed to be an otherwise fun night. Thankfully all I had to worry about was my $4 total plus tip. So, I definitely recommend this place but only for small groups, as to avoid the awkward bill-splitting.

One star for nice interior and decent music. My friend was celebrating his birthday party here so all of us got our names on the guestlist. We arrived at 10pm but didn't get in until 11:15 (lame). While standing in line a bouncer (who looked like Forest Whitaker) pulled me aside to tell me that he couldn't let me in because my dress shirt was too baggy. WTF? That's the first time I've ever heard such a thing. I asked if I can tuck in my shirt, roll-up my sleaves, put on a sweater vest, but he still wouldn't budge. I was better dressed than so many people there (I had cufflinks!). My girlfriend got mad and asked who's in charge (she's so awesome) and the bouncer looked hesitant and pointed us to the overseer. After a chat with the overseer he looked really surprised that I was being kicked out and said that they'll work something out and told me to get back in line. He also asked me who was kicking me out. I have a hunch that the bounced just wanted me to bribe him to let me in. The inside of the club also had poor ventilation. I hate this place and would never go back.

It's a large open room with an upstairs area, and brings in a very easy going crowd.  The Mezzanine definitely attracts interesting characters, but that's my favorite quality of San Francisco. We arrived early to beat the long line.  The venue wasn't overly hot like most clubs.  There were a lot of stalls in the bathroom so there wasn't a long line of girls to deal with. The only drawback to the Mezzanine is the parking is limited and there are always flocks of bums hassling me for money when I get out of my car...but then again that's SF for you.
