Arguably one of the toughest lounges/nightclubs to get into in New York is the Boom Boom Room (now known as the Top of the Standard). The Boom Boom Room sits at the 18th floor of the Standard Hotel which is home to 4 Meatpacking District hotspots (Standard Grill, the Standard Ice Skating Rink, the Boom Boom room and the Standard Beirgarden) and has views overlooking New Jersey on one side and the rest of the city on the other side. A lot of people don't bother even checking this place out because they hear the door is impenetrable and for the most part they're right. But what a lot of people don't know is that until 10 PM there is no door policy of any kind (from 11 PM on its guest list only). Also what even more people don't know is that they actually serve food. The Boom Boom Room has its own kitchen and has a bar menu that consists of high end bar food (grilled shrimp, foie gras...you know typical high end bar food). Another unique thing about the Boom Boom Room is that in some cases its actually cheaper to get bottle service than to order individual cocktails. Cocktails at the Boom Boom Room cost about $21 but a bottle of Moet Chandon costs $120 (if you split the bottle with someone then three cocktails cost more than a bottle of champagne). This is very surprising especially since this bottle usually costs about 3 to 4 times as much at other Meatpacking District clubs. There is a live band that comes in at around 7 for entertainment but the DJ doesn't come in till 11 PM (better make your reservations now since there's no way to get in without one after 10 PM). The lounge itself is very elegant and modern. Off white leather seats complement the stunning bar area. But it all takes a back seat to the stunning views of the city that can be seen from all angles of the lounge. The Boom Boom Room is a great place to go to meet friends before going out and if you have connections it could be a great place to spend your night out. Also when you go be sure to get the fries (they're really excellent) and check out the bathrooms (the private stalls even have excellent views of Manhattan)!

Oh, it warms my heart to see that this place only has 3 stars as it is. Friends and I met up here to celebrate graduation a few weekends ago, and after 45 minutes in this horrid club, not only was my wallet down to just BART fare home, but I had wasted time actually dancing to the 30-second sets the DJ quickly ripped through for the sweaty, drunk upper-middle class people long enough to get a cocktail spilled all over my feet. After spending $3 to check our coats we went for a few drinks. We are not in Las Vegas people, a Vodka-Cran should NOT cost $9. We also spent another $10 on a round of some sweet shot which was delicious and preferable because they used Stoli. Needless to say, I will not waste another night here in the near future. The one star goes to the slide you can actually use to enter into the bar, which is pretty fucking rad. Another plus is how close it is to the rest of Union Square and tons of other better places to spend your night.

I know there are a lot of reviews of how biased and exclusive this place can be.  Heck, i've even experienced it when a group of my friends went for a birthday, and were turned away because their group was "too large", and was 99% asian.  Even with all the reviews, I still decided to throw my bday party there, and made sure to load up on bottle service to make sure my 30+ guests were all getting in. I don't think Slide actually has a problem with asians, i think it's just they have a problem with large groups with no bottle service.  I called during the day to make sure my reservations were confirmed, and when we got there, everything was perfect.  They knew I had tables reserved, and everything was catered to us.  We went straight to the front, and the doormen were all super friendly and didn't give us any problems with the large group.  And yes, we were 90% asian.  They made sure we all got in without any hassle, and the service continued throughout the entire night.  Even when some additional guys showed up later during the night who I didnt' put on the guestlist, they still got them in right away with no problems. The place is definitely a very New York style lounge.  You go there to mingle and look good, not dance.  Sure, it does have a dance floor, but it isn't very big, and if you do dance, you end up dancing more to the side of the area.  It's definitely a place to get tables.  Otherwise you'd spend the entire night just standing around.  The decor is very chic and classy, definitely one of the best in SF.  The overall space is very well done.  The baby grand piano is the DJ booth, and the bar is very stylish.  Me and my friends had a great time here.  No, i take that back.  We had a blast!    The crowd was just right, maybe a snobbish, but it's expected here.  I'd definitely come back here, but I'd always have to get bottles.  Otherwise I'd be writing a very different review right now.
