everything was great ( the bar tender wasn't exactly attentive but he was  cute enough that I would forgive him).  Then I went outside to smoke a cigarette. They wouldn't let me back in ( my wrist band was white, not green???)  to settle my $60 tab and get my credit card back. I had to start crying for the manager to let me in. I just wanted to pay and go home. It was horrible.

Well The Granada is truly a unique venue in category all it's own. This is place does an outstanding job of combining a dance club and dance studio all in one. Anyone who's gone out dancing socially knows that there are drawbacks to both salsa clubs and studios (clubs - parking, drunks, sleazy crowds etc.; studios - lack of energy, ambiance, no live bands). I've heard arguments for both sides and it seems people are pretty polar when it comes to having a preference (fortunately for me I can have fun wherever - as long as there is good music and fun dance partners, I'll dance anywhere). Upon entering you'll notice a dance studio that features booths at one end of the floor with a stage for live bands at the other end. In the back corner you will find a bar serving up mojitos and other tasty adult beverages for your drinking pleasure. There is an outdoor patio behind the bar where you will encounter people catching a breather or even dancing outside. Along the sides of the dance floor itself are a line of chairs (no tables) where people can hang out between songs (I'd guess the dance floor is about 25 by 60 feet in size). The band played 2 sets when I was there Friday before ending around starting at around 10:30 with  the 1st set and ending the 2nd set around 12:45 or so (there are live bands pretty much every Friday & Saturday night). This band (Angel Lebron) played strictly salsa during their sets (no bachata, merengue or cumbia) while the DJ played a variety of genres before, in between and after sets. As you can imagine, this is an L.A. salsa crowd so most people were dancing in slots; when I tried to get some of the ladies to dance in a less constricting and more fluid circular style, I received some resistance at first but eventually they caught on and felt comfortable with my style. I guess it was a quite refreshing for them because I broke up the monotony of the style of dancing they are ingrained with there. Even though The Granada tries to minimize the "L.A.-ness" effect of the salsa dancing with their no dip/flip/lift policy, you can't help but notice the type of dancers before you. If you enter the dance floor from the front entrance just be careful as the dancers here are so focused on the dancing that they tend to forget about their surroundings (as evident by the fact I got elbowed to the side of the head by a woman who was spinning recklessly). By the way, neither her nor her dance partner acknowledged what happened. Normally I'd be a little pissed, but I knew it hurt her more than me since I have a rock solid head. After 3 nights of salsa dancing in L.A., I was actually feigning some Cuban salsa (did I actually just say that?). Well luckily the DJ played a couple Cuban songs and luckily for me, I was able to locate a terrific, fun dance partner that actually could dance Cuban salsa damn well (thanks Julia!). I don't think I'd check out a Saturday night here (L.A. salsa dancers on a competition night - no thanks), but for Friday nights, I'd definitely come back. A couple quick reminders: -Guestlist @ thegranadaguestlist@gm...($3/off before 11pm) -No t-shirts are allowed (collared shirts are mandatory) -Easy, safe parking (police station is less than 200 feet away) -Fridays are more of a social night (no dips, lifts, flips etc. are allowed or you will get kicked out). -Saturdays feature dance competitions which do allow the those moves but I believe it's only within the confines of the competition portion of the night, not the social dancing part. -Dance lessons on Fridays happen at the same time (upstairs - beginners and intermediate downstairs). -Show up late for the lesson, you might not get in (I think this is only for the intermediate lesson as they don't want people messing up the routines; I saw people walk in late for the beginner lessons though). -There is a water cooler there but am not sure if it gets refilled quickly enough for your taste. =============== For more salsa recommendations: http://www.rateclubs.com/li...

I went here for my first time yesterday for Slanted Comedy, every first Thursday of the month. They always put on a good show. It was hosted by Edwin San Juan and featured comedians like Justin Rivera, K.T. Tatara, Kevin Shea, and Shawn Felipe. Valet was only $5, but I thought it was closed so we drove around the neighborhood to find parking, you couldn't park in the neighborhood! So we parked a couple blocks aways, wasn't too bad. Show supposedly started at 10pm, but we didn't even get in until 10:30pm. We were seated and served promptly. All my friend and I got were the fries with garlic sauce and beers. I had a decent time, I like the San Jose Improv more, it's bigger, better, nicer, and cleaner. This one was kinda ghetto to me. Two item minimum of course so you can choose from drinks or food, appetizers, salads, desserts, etc. Can't get a pint of draft beer, only in the souvenir cups which run at about $13! Wack so I just got two Coronas. Highlight of the show was getting my homegirl on the stage with Justin Rivera and his infamous red balls show. Funniest guys were probably KT, Kevin Shea, and Justin Rivera (even though I already seen in).
