Partied here last night to celebrate 2 of my friends' birthdays. As I turned the corner on Ellis and saw the line wrapped around the building at barely 1030PM, I knew guestlist would close before we made it inside... bummer. I don't remember the last time I paid full cover to get into a club. Maybe they wanted the Vegas-club effect, complete with go-go dancers, but in all honesty, they were not good... and not hot. It was difficult to get to the bar because it was so crowded and I was shoved here and there a few times by drunk ass girls who didn't care about who they stepped to get from point A to point B. Irritating. However, when we finally got to the bar, the bartender who served us was super FAST and entertaining, haha. The music, for the most part, was decent. They played several, popular hits that I enjoyed, but every now and then this trumpet player busted out with his instrument, trying to mix with the DJ at the same time, I guess. I don't know - I wasn't feeling that. I could do without the trumpet. I heard there was another room in the rear of the club, but yea, I didn't even attempt to check it out because it was so packed. This is the type of club that would never usually go to, but because I wouldn't miss celebrating my friends' birthdays with them, I made the most of it :) I personally like more laid back, smaller venues.

So this is good . . . Philly and I are not long time friends.  We met a few months ago when I moved here from lands far, far away.  Upon my arrival in the broken bell city, I was instantly struck by two stark realities.  First, everywhere offers cheap eats and drinks.  Fact: This place is easy on the wallet.  Second, Philly is chocked full of great spots to see music.  Johnny Brenda's tops my list of spots to check out a show. First off, I'm a bit of a music junkey.   Given the choice, I would rather burn my hard earned pay watching some crooner bellow out his or her latest tunes than booze my way through the latest pop ditties queued up on a new swanky macbook.  With that said, Johnny Brenda's walks the line between bar and venue nicely and so tops my list of places to spend a fine evening. First, the intimacy of the venue is fantastic.  I had the pleasure of checking out Jessica Lea Mayfield and I was struck by how available the artists seemed.  Besides the tiny stage, the whole lay out is reminiscent of someone's basement, giving it a backyard jam session feel.  However, where the house-party bar setup can, in some cases, seem over-hyped and cliche, Johnny Brenda's accomplishes it without sacrificing credibility.  This balance feeds heavily into the experience. Second, the beer list is killer.  The offerings rotate regularly and suited my tastes well.  Like many local watering holes, the beers were mostly philly locals and priced to move.  I dig it for sure. All and sundry, well worth a visit.

This place is just plain old stank, I took my man here and the girls are all crystal meth addicts and prostitutes, my man heard about it from a friend ,we should have known it was going to be bad when we saw how small the place was, I think there where homeless people in there, i made the mistake of going dont make the same mistake I did, luckily i made it out of there disease free, you may not be so lucky!

i've had a seriously schizo/bipolar experience with this place. i've been here twice for that 80's club on sundays. both times were completely obnoxious b/c i think 80's clubs are gayyyyy! and i'm rite b/c there were all these gay/metro guys dancing all gay and crap. i can't get over how dorky the band is and cannot fathom why girls would want to rub their titties on them. during the day u know they do my IT? :P and i had to pay 10 bucks on a sunday nite for this shit....arrgghhhh!!!! why do people make me go here???? and then on the other hand, there's dirty ass reggae nite on thursdays. don't get me wrong, i freakin love love love reggae!!! but i'm not really diggin the atmosphere. it's a lil too ghetto (even for me :P). music was arite tho. guess i just couldn't get too into it cuz of the scene...
