last night was my third time hangin at Halo. It is one of the few places that i can go to, and be guaranteed a great time. i was pleasantly surprised to see that a bar has been added upstairs, and i love the new lighted-tables. the vibe in halo is always upbeat as is the music. being from n.y i thrive on finding places that remind me of being in the city. Hola is one of the places that is my little home away from home spot...great place to take friends.

To tell the truth, didn't know what to expect. Places that try to pass themselves off  as lounge, nightclub, and restaurant all rolled into one rarely perform any of the components well. Wifey said that I should stop acting my advanced age and get out more.  You know, mingle. While I'm nowhere close to retirement, I'm definitely well past my slam-dance and tequila body shot days. While wifey's heart may have been in the right place, I still cannot for the life of me figure out why she booked us dinner at Prana for 5:30pm!!  FIVE-THIRTY, PEEE EMMMM!!  Nobody who's even in the vicinity of cool eats dinner at 5:30pm. When we arrived at Prana, the place was a friggin' ghost-town.  I don't even think the hostess was expecting us, despite our resevervations.  When we walked through the mirrorred doors, she froze like a deer in front of some pretty blinding headlights.  I'm sure the first thing that went through that blonde head of hers was "what the hell are you two doing here at five-frickin' thirty in the evening????". We sit down in the huge space.  There are big-ass buddhas all over the place and a DJ shrine in the center.  The space looks even bigger because wifey and I are the only people in the entire goddamned place!!!  Even the buddhas were giving us the evil eye.  As I sat down, a tumbleweed rolled by and I let out a sigh which echoed, echoed, echoed, echoed.... Our server was a delight and very attentive... probably because there was NO ONE ELSE IN THE ENTIRE PLACE!!! Surprisingly, the food was good.  The roasted corn soup was really nice and I thought the lamb shank was tasty.  Portions were generous and prices were reasonable. I can't blame Prana for doing exactly what a nightclub should do.  In fact, I'd have been disappointed if any other losers actually walked through the door before 9pm.  It was mine and wifey's mistake for our half-assed attempt at recapturing our youth. If I were still freewheelin' and young, I think Prana would be a great place to check out and hang. But I'm old. Clubs ain't my scene. And wifey isn't allowed to book dinner anymore.

Main point:  its hard to believe how packed this place gets and how good & loud the house/dance music is for a weekday, but only on wednesdays, 5 -10 pm. I know you don't believe me.  Just go once and give it a chance. Dear Wednesday, I really like you as a day and everything, but I feel like something is missing.   I'd like some eclectic art and Deep House / Electro House music please, turned WAY up and supersized and applied with electroshock immediately after I get off work!  What?  111 Minna??? Review is for Wed. night.  Highly recommended for Wed. early eves 5-10 pm -- when its packed and the music is bumpin'.  This is one of the best places in SF to both see art shows dance to some great music mixes.  I like art fine, but I come here for the great djs. Front room is a bit quieter, people mingling around not really dancing, but checking out art and one another. In the back room is a 2nd DJ and sound system.  Here's where the hardcore dancers are, up on the stage, as close as they can get to the speakers.  A pretty good mix of races, gender, and sexual preference.  Some beautiful people.  An excellent place for Wed. evenings, but you must get here early (like 6 or 7) because they close at 10 or 10:30.  If you arrive at 5 you can get 5 hours of dancing and get home in time to go to bed early. I would give it 1 more star if people would let loose and dance a little more here...too many of the people didn't seem to know how to dance and/or were too reserved to dance.  But a few (20%) can be seen dancin' there rears off here. 111 Minna (early 5-10pm) and Anu (later 10pm-2am) are THE places to be on Wed. nights in SF House music & dancing -- Minna & Anu may as well be joined at the hip, they are that tight of a pub-crawl pair for Wed. evenings.  (See my review on Anu for more info).
