Julia This is a rateclubs for the overall restaurant/bar/lounge/rooftop.  It's an all in one spot.  What's good about this place is that you can have a late dinner and then head up to the roof top lounge.  Just make sure you time it right because the rooftop is not open until midnight.  Once you get up there, the crowd is predominantly asian and the bridge and tunnel crowd.  But you know, i don't mind and there are nights that I truly enjoy myself and nights that I'm bored to death.  SO really, hit or miss for me but def worth a try. There's a bar area up front and the scene is not bad, drinks are decent but it'll cost you like any spot in nyc.  The door policy in effect on weekends and it's not too strict.  I've been able to get in past the bouncer as a dude no problem.  Of course i look right and don't wear sneaks and a cap or anything... Now to the all important feature... Food.  First thing is that i enjoy the main room better than the garden.  Try to get a booth is it's a party of 2 to a party of 6.  The garden has flimsy seats and tables that are way too small to fit the dishes that I'm going to order.  But on a nice sunny day for brunch, the garden is the better choice. My must have for this place is the chorizo and mussels in broth.  Get extra bread and dip away.  This is their one great dish.  All other items on the menu pales in comparison.  Mushroom fries are ok (just weird to have them so fried), bruschetta is ok, calamari is ok, crab cakes are ok...    To me, all the apps are just ok except the chorizo and mussels.... Dinner is usually the steak frites which are ok (actually below average as i ordered it medium and it was not even pink and pretty dry).  I've had the salmon before and it's ok.  They serve pizzas which are ok.  i don't recommend the mushroom burger as it was soggy the last time i had it. The place is def setup nice and I appreciate that especially if you want to hang around as a group or as a couple after dinner.  The service hasn't always been the best for me here.  the bus boys are excellent, but the waiters always seem too busy.

KARMA AFRIKA on LEAP DAY! We got here around 7:00 PM and there were about 3 tables open for dinner. There was going to be a little party starting later on and so we went early for dinner. It took the waiter about 15 minutes to allow us to sit down. He didn't know (forgot) about the party later on and seemed to not want to seat us even though we said we wanted to eat dinner here anyway. That was weird. Finally we got to sit and order, the waiter made it clear that he wanted us at the 2 person table and not the 4 person table immediately next to us. Ten minutes later, the Karma Afrika crew shows up and some want food...well, they sat next to us at the 4 person table. We filled the place up so much they turned people down who wanted to have dinner here. I ordered the Tofu Curry with rice. I got the Tofu Curry with cous cous. The carrots undercooked and the other vegetables seemed overcooked. I noticed other people leaving who were waiting to order food, they were starving and went someplace else to eat. The service is pretty slow and confusing. They took a while to even take our friends orders. Once the party started, we danced, drank yummy cocktails (tasty, sweet, lots of ginger, although sadly weak in alcohol), then started the Afro Raffle. The other people working started taking out all the tables one by one. They wanted to take the table we were using for the Raffle prizes and event information.  We had already told them we would clear it after the raffle, since we needed to put the raffle tickets and Karma Afrika stuff there. They were very insistent and before our friend even got back to the table after announcing the winners and handing out prizes, they came at me for the table again. I had to gather everything before they swiped the table. One table, in the front corner of the room. Music was good, we had fun. All they need is a better system for the dinner turn music, bar and dancing. The place is small. We deal with it. 3.6 stars

Rassela's has a long history in SF, back when it was on Divisadero I personally think it was more hopping, but then that could just be a fuzzy memory.    If you haven't had Ethiopian food before, this is a great place to start.    First, it is now easy to find,  right by the old Kabuki 8 in Japantown, and across from the Japan Center garage.  What more could you want in an SF restaurant than easy to find and good parking?   But wait, there's more... Rassela's is a jazz club, too -- and a popular one.  You can count on jazz most nights of the week, and there is an online calendar.  They are also usually a listed venue in http://sfgate.comand KCSM's jazz notes. Be prepared for the usually variable quality of jazz musicians, but it fits well with the go-with-the-flow, eat-with-your-hands nature of the food. My usual menu selections are the doro wot (spicy chicken stew) and the vegetarian combination (stewed lentils and a few other mixed vegetables).   The also have sambusa's, which is something i haven't seen in other ethiopian restaurants, but which are quite tasty, similiar to samosas except flatter and with less potatoes. This is a great place to take a bunch of people with adventurous hearts and palates, not so much a place to take your conservative grandmother.  Luckily for me, neither of my grandmothers was the least bit conservative, so this is one of my favorite places to eat in the city.
