A San Francisco landmark that has been entertaining people since the 40's.  My dad used to come here when he was a kid growing up in the city, although i think back then it was located on Market st.  Bimbos is fairly large for an SF venue but just small enough that you cant get lost, with a main stage, dance floor that leads to stepped tables and an elevated back bar. All the best local bands like tainted love, super diamond etc. play here every few months.  If you are lucky you can find bigger bands that like to play this small venue which gives you a more intimate feel with the band.  And from time to time Robbin Williams will stop by to try out new material but make sure to be on the mailer since tix always sell out day of.  What ever the show ,the venue and people that come out always make for a good time in the classic SF night spot.

Cafe du Nord is a good spot, with the potential to be great. They have cool, unpretentious ambiance, great beer, friendly bartenders, good music, and they're only a few (stumbly) blocks from my home. They don't try to be anything other than a night club, and they don't use stupid trendy decorations and phony lighting to make you feel like you're there because you're cooler than everybody else. You're there to drink, listen, hang out, and listen. And that's what the place feels like. My only (minor) gripe is their sound-- it seems a bit weak. It really doesn't hit the lows and highs very well. Maybe it's the acoustics of the room, where it doesn't fill in quite well enough. Or maybe they just have a crappy sound guy every time I'm there. It just doesn't quite thump like at Bottom of the Hill or Slims, those systems that can shake you down to your soul... Also, it's worth noting there's just a few too many annoying yuppy doofs in attendence.

Amalia was a four star spot on this Tuesday night (had intended on doing the beer and cheese event but called and found out the cheese was already gone). I wanted some social time and I work in midtown, I had yet to try Ava in the "Dream Hotel", so I made my way across 55th. Now this is sort of a duel review since, when I walked into Ava, I looked around and decided to leave. I guess that says enough about the place, but my walk took me past D'Or and Amalia: one and the same place. The bar was modern with very comfortable high chairs. They offer the full menu and fine wine list, by the bottle or glass. I was, as my intention for the night, fortunate enough to have sat between Natalie and Bill. Now, when I find a seat open next to a woman (being single) I jump right in. Bill, as I found, had already been working the social moment with Natalie so when I arrived and sat between them, it became a small party. Bill had bought a phenomenal bottle of wine to enjoy, he didn't want to drink alone (in town on business) and had already shared a glass with Natalie; he insisted I try this 5-star Chateau Musar 1998 from Lebanon and I am glad I did. So my shout out to Natalie and Bill for the great company. I ordered the Calamari: rings fried crispy and sauteed tender, chorizo, white beans and grilled flat bread: quite good. I then tried the recommended Lamb Balls with smoked eggplant, ras el hanout and mint: spicy, tender and balanced flavor. Natalie was finishing the salmon which she raved about and I realized Amalia was doing a great job. An average value with no surprises, Amalia served up some good food, a very nice wine list and pleasant service. The place looked clean and had that modern sexy kind of feel (the three hostesses were beautiful). Downstairs, D'Or was not open but looked very cool and well worth a see when it is open. So, if you are in midtown and are looking for lunch or dinner, then give Amalia a chance; life is filled with pleasant surprises.
