I have been holding off on going to Tao because of my preconceived notion that it was just another over hyped Asian-fusion spot with mediocre food and servers wearing ridiculously pseudo Asian attire.  Well, I was pretty much correct.   Went here recently for a company function, so I wasn't at all concerned about the cost of the bill.   Was expecting decent food, what I was left with was some of the most average to below average Asian fare I've had in a while.    The spring rolls were blah, the kung pao chicken was lacking kick and much flavor, and the other entrees were overall less than impressive.   Best part was probably the dessert.    The mouse was pretty good.    Will not be recommending or coming back.

At AsiaSF you're paying more for the entertainment than for the food. Most of the ladyboys are jawdroppingly gorgeous and have figures any natural-born females would be envious of. The "show" consisted of the ladyboys lipsyching and dancing. There were two sets with two songs each. If you've been to Thailand before, it's similar but more intimate and there's food. Tip: The servers come around asking each table if they're celebrating anything. Even if you're not, say you're there for a birthday. The "birthday" boy in our group got a free blowjob shot out of one of the ladyboy's cleavage! Since I'm the type that goes to AsiaSF and takes more pictures of the food than of the "gender illusionists", my review is focused more on the food. I came with a group of 5 and we did the Ménage à Trois (unfortunately, not THAT kind) - where each person picks an appy, entrée, and dessert. We decided to dine family-style so we could each try a bit of everything. You know how fancy food descriptions can make a simple dish seem more exciting? AsiaSF takes that concept to the extreme. While all the food was decent, nothing was as inspired as the way they were described. ("chiffonade of Chinese cabbage" and "sprigs of cilantro" sound a little pretentious, don't cha think?) Anyhoo, between the five of us, we got: - TAMARIND CHICKEN SATAYS ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): peanut sauce was good - AHI BURGER ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): yum! One of the more unique items - GRILLED SHRIMP & HERB SALAD ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): I really liked this, especially with all the cilantro; was spicier than we expected - BLACKENED TUNA SASHIMI ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): just tuna tataki with pickled ginger, a little boring and uninspired - SAKE STEAMED MUSSELS ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): mussels were kinda small, but broth was good - ORANGE LAMB ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): not enough lamb! - MISO GLAZED KING SALMON ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): I liked the colours in this plate and the salmon wasn't overcooked; there wasn't much miso flavour though - DUNGENESS CRAB CAKES ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): good; seemed more like an appy than an entrée - "BABY GOT BACK" RIBS ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): for a dish described as "grilled to perfection", it wasn't (it was good, just not perfect) - SANSHO SPICED FILET MIGNON ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): beef was seasoned and cooked well and I liked the star-shaped potatoes :) - WARM CHOCOLATE CAKE ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): very rich chocolate flavour, but did not have the melted chocolate ganache center like described :( The cake was cooked all the way through. - CANDIED GINGER RICE PUDDING ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): bland - BANANA BEIGNET SPLIT ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): similar to fried banana with ice cream, but more pretentious - PINEAPPLE CHEESECAKE ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): meh - trio of MINIATURE ICE CREAM CONES ( http://www.rateclubs.com/bi...): coconut, ube, and jackfruit This was one of those experiences I was glad to have once - but once is enough.

I'm not that into clubbing but I have friends who work as promoters or doormen at exclusive places around the city. I've been to my share of clubs in NYC and Las Vegas. So, I have a pretty good sense of how the club scene works and what it takes to get into a club. Having said that, Cielo pretends to be something that it is not... an exclusive club. When there is a need to charge $20 for cover, it kinda says something about the place. In my experience, the more exclusive the club is the less likely you will pay cover. Especially if you are female! Now, I'm not cheap. I'm just used to getting into places for free or with minimal cover. It's the principal of the matter! (Just as a reference I went to Cielo with a male friend at around 2:30am on a Sat night). Having gotten that off my chest, I'll admit that the space is great and the people are typical of the clubs in the MPD. It kind of had the vibe of a nice Las Vegas club (like PURE). I would have loved the place if it weren't for the bullshit cover and the fake air of exclusivity.
