With the staggering array of small, proprietor-run restaurants in Philadelphia, I've always considered Stephen Starr properties a nice convenience and diversion, but not necessarily my favorites. The theme-park quality of most Starr venues is fun, but at times lacks gravitas or authenticity. Still, the service is usually extremely pleasant and effective; I've rarely had a bad service experience in a Starr property. One night, having just about finished dinner at El Rey, our waiter asked us if we'd like to try out the new place in the back. He implied that it was somewhat exclusive and private and unusual. We had seen a party of diners exit through the kitchen earlier, and this explained the strange sighting (again, think "theme park" ). We paid our check and were escorted through the kitchen, through the back kitchen entrance and presented at a dark door. We entered and were approached by an employee. We were told that there were not seats for us at the moment, but that there may be some available soon. Then - this is incredible - the employee asked us to wait out back. He explained that they were trying to achieve a certain atmosphere and that standing was not permitted. I explained that we were invited by staff, that we would be happy to wait, but that we would not be waiting on the kitchen stairs. This intensely rude person said "I don't care where you wait, but you can't wait here." I quietly asked to see the manager. The rude employee told me that the manager would say the same thing. Now I'm annoyed. I said "OK, just get the manager now, thanks." Against my better judgment and will we waited on the kitchen stairs for the manager. I must note that the manager was extremely pleasant and apologized. She explained that we should have never been invited back by our El Rey server unless seats were available. I replied that it was irrelevant, and that you don't invite someone to your "special new bar" and then ask that person to wait on the kitchen stairs. I was offered promises of free food or drink, and I politely declined. Contriving scarcity is an old economic manipulation trick, tried and true. But do they really expect people to wait on the kitchen stairs to go to a Stephen Starr property? Spend your money wisely, and walk around the corner to any one of the many hotel bars, fine-dining establishments, tavern, cheater's bars, sports bars or dives and avoid this silly place with abysmally rude, ill-mannered, narcissistic, clueless employees. Franklin Mortgage achieves the same vibe with zero attitude.

I personally love STK.  It's not your typical manly steakhouse.  Rather, it's a steakhouse with sex appeal.  If you want to grow hair on your chest while you mow on steak, go to Peter Lugar's.  If you want to enjoy a swanky vibe with a date or a group of girlfriends while mowing on steak, go to STK. The atmopshere is pretty standard Meatpacking district swank.  Always an interesting mix of crowd, with your B&T/Cougar staples hovering around the bar.  The service here is great, and the food is really quite good.  The bread they serve at the beginning of the meal is delicious, so don't feel shy about going after it.  I love the Little Big Macs with truffles.  The steaks also come in portion choices that accomodate the carnivorous levels of big men and small girls alike.  Overall, STK is a good time if you enjoy steak and don't mind a bit if a scene.

Excellent place! If you are the kind of people who like to go to Space or Pacha in Ibiza, this is the place that you come to. The "bartenderesses" are really cute kind and patient. They have the best sound system in Boston in this place. The managers have good imagination. The crowd is the best totally international and not as pretentious as Rumor or Venu. I went last Friday again and this time they had some ladies on the catwalk showing underwear in the middle of some very deep house. So cool. The $15 (if you're on the list) also filters out some of the crappy crowd.
