*grad bar review* easy $5 parking right next door.  the line appeared long, but it moved very quickly. perhaps the pre-gaming in the car helped. bouncers and security guards weren't intimidating/rude...i usually see the big buffed men who look like they'd rather die than be where they are. beautiful outdoor patio with free tacos?! damn i wish i tried some. squished ourselves to the bar and like any other place, it took forever to get our drinks. sexy and talented dancers to entertain me. i was curious at what the upstairs was all about and we were able to just sit on the couches without any problems.  perhaps it was b/c of grad night, but the crowd was a bit...disappointing.  they really need to not worry about packing the venue because it was just so uncomfortable with people spilling alcohol all over me and girls stabbing my feet with their heels. besides that, definitely don't mind coming back!

I was cautiously optimistic going into XIV.  An 8 course meal for only $59 a person?? What a steal!  Better yet, you can select from any of the items on the a la carte menu vs going with the chef's choice.  I immediately jumped on this opportunity.  My only regret was being a little timid with my selections and ordering some "lighter" dishes as I was with my mom and girlfriend.  It was still an excellent meal.  The most memorable items: -the scallops, super fresh, creamy, and seared to perfection, accompanied by crispy tempura batter pieces -liberty duck breast, cooked to a nice medium rare with melt in your mouth fois gras and savory duck leg confit -asparagus risotto, simple but rich and the rice was served at a good slightly al dente doneness -jidori chicken (I know, I know..I ordered chicken, how boring..but we were only drinking white that night), really moist and the dish was really tasty with the potatoes and onion jus The weakest dish was probably the halibut, which was bland, underseasoned, and slightly overcooked. Server was really friendly.  Valet took 20 minutes to get our car after dinner.  I'll be coming back, but next time I'll be concentrating on more meat dishes.

The mashup music in the "club" is a total shit show. The downstairs area tends to be pretty empty even on Saturday nights while the upstairs is a sweltering inferno. My first time there, I rolled up in semi-uncomfortable but in-my-mind cool Kenneth Cole kicks that I paid close to 100 bucks for. The asshole at the entrance told me that I needed to dress "less casually". Are you effing kidding me? This may have been the first time I got grief in SF from anyone - LA this is NOT, you fools. The drinks are watered down and expensive but par for the course for "high-end" SOMA clubs. Also, the 20 dollar cover is obscene but again as expected.
