After going to a bunch of shows at the Mezzanine, I feel inspired to get on here and say MEH. The first few times I went, I noticed they play an interesting game of balancing clubiness with being a live show venue.  This seemed to work at first, especially for more dance oriented shows where it didn't matter as much which way you're pointed.  Over time, things have slid downhill for anyone who actually likes music. I think most of the problem has to do with changes made to the layout over time.  Little pockets have been created in the club, which mean for lousy acoustics.  Sure it's a neat place to hang out once you get to your hidey hole, but ugh on the ears.  The dance floor is crammed in too tight, so it's quite crushing for live shows (I've wondered if they oversell their capacity, or their capacity rating is wrong or something). It used to be possible to hang out up on the upper deck and watch a show from the railing (which had horrid sound, but you could breathe), but now that's all cram packed with VIP booths with bottle service.  Now, I've been to a lot of upscale clubs with bottle service, and I realize that VIP booths have their place, but that place is exclusive corners in trendy clubs.  It is NOT ok to block the only upper floor view at a live show venue with bottle service booths, especially when we're talking about cheaper indie shows where the booths don't tend to even get bought. These new booths also make it extremely difficult to get to the bars, to the bathroom, and anyplace else.  Going up and down the stairs is also awful because instead of being somewhere hidden in the back, they are in one of the best spots in the club to watch the show.  In they they are supposed to be kept cleared off, but in practice this doesn't happen a lot. Mezannine: you need to decide what you are.  If you're going to be a dance club, just be a dance club.  That said, places like Ruby Skye, the End Up, and DNA Lounge have you beat by miles.  If you're going to be a live venue, rip all the club crap out and be a decent live venue.  Either way, fix your acoustics and your staircase placement.

The best way to describe this place, the House of Blues without the commercialism. I have to admit that I have only been to this place once but I was very impressed. One thing that I loved about it was how many down to earth people go there. I did not expect that, especially given the neighborhood it is in, but I was surprised. I personally love piano bars, as I believe they give a great vibe to the atmosphere and the person who was playing the other night was very good. The drinks were also not expensive and there was no cover charge. I only have two complaints about the place. One is how dark the bar is, at least on the night I went. I like when the lights are dim but these lights were almost pitch dark. You could not see who was in front of you and if you lose your party, do not look for them, text them and arrange to meet again outside. The only other thing was the layout. Now I do not blame the bar or the employees for this but I found the layout odd. For starters the bar is right by the door and while I am sure it is good business to have the bar where everyone can see it, it makes for a bottleneck feeling in the entire place. Most people spend the majority of the time next to bar and thus one side of the place is crowded while the other one is not. It is difficult to pull off in a smaller environment and there were many examples when people either spilled their drinks on the floor, bar itself or other people. I also went on a Saturday night at peak drinking time, so that could have also been an explanation for the crowd. But do not get me wrong, this is a place I would like to visit again, just maybe not on a busy Saturday night.

I've walked by here a million times. I've been weary because, yeah it's the Metreon. I came in with a ton of friends on a Sunday night not expecting much. 1) DRINKS! I love me some drinks. Except here. Their midori sour was anything but. Kind of watered down and tasted like kool aid. Blegh. OK lets try one more...lets try a Catalina. SO GOOD!! Perfect mix of Sauza Tequila, Peach schnapps, blue curacao and sweet and sour. WINNER! 2 of these bad boys did the trick! 2) On to our food. The first time we came here was during the Olympics (way over due review I know), so we didn't mind the 15 minute wait while we watched on the huge plasma screens. For me I got the Chicken Piccata. Now for $18 it was good but not THAT good. Wouldn't write home about it. My friend didnt know what to get so I told him to get Paella. I told him everything in it and he was sold. Now Paella is a huge spanish dish...I was expecting a big pipping hot plate of Paella... yeah right like 3 scoops of rice, some vegetables and 2 fucking mussels. $18 down the drain. The second time I came however I ordered the Tortellini Pesto with roasted pine nuts, SO GOOD! All in all the service here is good, love the atmosphere, their drinks are a 3/5 stars, and the food is pretty good but a bit steep.
