I see a lot of 1 and 2 stars on here. Reality for me would be that this is a 2.5 star, but I give it a 3 for the benefit of a doubt (and the lack of half stars.) The Varsity is deep rooted into the history of ATL. It is one of the few drive in restaurants that remain and is one of the only drive ins I've been to with a parking garage and a large eat-in area. The history gives it a great charm with the drive in aspect, its pretty close to the interstate so its easy to get to. ^ that's the good points.. not many are there? If you have never been to the Varsity, its kind of like taking a walmart on Christmas eve 1 hour before they close, taking all those people, and putting them in a walk-in closet. The place is PACKED. The benefit to this is that the line is blazing fast. This is because the cashiers are loud and yell your order in diner language as you order it. They actually expect you to do that as well but I'm not quite so entertained by having to pre-translate what I want. After you order, you have to stand in the shoulder to shoulder mob beside the counter waiting for your order, then wrestle your way through the crowd to get to it. Maybe you could crowd surf? I did not try it as I'm not exactly a skinny dude. So you wait in the line "wow this must be amazing" you think. You work through the crowd to the counter to pick it up, only to find someone has ran to Krystal, taken them out of the cardboard boxes and placed them on your Varsity tray. "This cant be right" you think "there's a million people here and Krystal.. well the Krystal was empty!" But you think maybe it TASTES really good, so you fight back through the crowd, climb the stairs to the seating area, being careful not to have any kids run into you and knock the tray out of your hands or spill the 2 gallon coke you ordered. You finally find a free seat and you bite into the Krystal burger only to find that it TASTES LIKE A KRYSTAL BURGER. I'm sorry, but if it weren't for the history and the heritage (and the nearby Georgia state university) this would be one out of business burger joint.

i love going here, especially on thursday nights. it's so refreshing to be there, because frankly, i hate going to clubs. the music, the people, the atmostphere. but the little temple is so different. the lines can be long, depending on who's DJing (i went the night peanut butter wolf was spinning. best night ever, but also, incredibly busy. glad i went early, but the line was wrapped around the building!). the drinks are good and strong, if you talk to the right bartender. the security aren't assholes who think they can push little asian girls like me around. they'll also watch out for you because the area's not so good. after too many drinks, i went outside for some air and a cigarette. some guys were hasseling me one night and a bouncer there actually had my back. probably the nicest thing a complete stranger has ever done for me in l.a. if you go early, the place is pretty romantic. went on a date here once for some dancing and to check out an excellent indie hip hop group. fun times. i can't wait to go back!

Love the candles and ambiance. Meatpacking so just an option within many, worth a shot.
