For a get together I arranged for a buddy from LA, I went with The Bubble Lounge as he'd heard plenty of good stuff about it during his 7 years working in SF.  We arrived quite early at 9:30pm and there were a couple of dozen people.  Kudos to them for no cover or a line. The decor on the main floor was hip and modern with inviting couches around the walls.  Most of the booths had reservations so seating was rather limited.  The bar itself was certainly long enough, affording plenty of elbow room for ordering between the chunky brothers and buxom Hispanic ladies loitering at the bar.  Otherwise, much of the place was packed with Asian fellas working the room. The volume of the house music was pleasantly moderate.  I had no trouble carrying on conversations without raising my voice, a huge plus in my book.  My 30-something sensibilities and ear drums just can't stand having to shout into each other's ears to talk. Drinks were creative enough.  The mimosas were average, given the mediocre champagne.  The Mimi Zaza wasn't too bad, just sweet enough.  As for my preference, they had some SF standard beers like Anchor Steam and Chimay, which ran out by 11pm.  My pet peeve though, no Guinness. The downstair dance floor/lounge cave seemed surprisingly familiar.  I had a distinct flashback of having wobbled out from a bender a few years back.  The cave-like atmosphere was definitely conducive for some wild drunken moves.  The second bar down there was practical, but with the kitchen right next to the bar, it smelled peculiarly like a pastry shop.  The restrooms were decent and there was a generous hallway for the half dozen ladies waiting their turn for relief. By the time we checked out at 1am, the place was packed.  I'd had a nice chill evening and my friend and his boys had their entertainment with some fresh college grads.  For $60 for 2, it's not a bad deal by SF standards.

Before reading about this bar, peep the category overhead: Dive Bars. Just because a place is considered to be a dive bar doesn't mean it won't be a great time or that there are vagrants waiting in the shadows to take your money. That being said, Oscar's is one of my favorite drinking establishments in the city. The ambience of the dim lighting, and low drum of conversation allow one to blend in and peoplewatch without drawing attention. Went down to Center City to go out for SIPS but started and ended my night at Oscar's. When their everyday special is .25 more than the SIPS special, save the crowds, I'm all set.If you stopped in last night you got to hear some 58 year old man named Rick rock out to 4 Van Halen songs on the jukebox wearing clip-on sunglasses and fistpumping. The waitstaff here is awesome! Extremely personable, family-run business and they aim to keep it that way. The food is okay, you're at a dive bar, not a gastropub, drink and the food gets better. Regardless, the waitress was nice enough to give us food that somebody ordered and didn't show up for gratis, can't beat free food & cheap drinks. Don't be that guy who brings the ATM/Debit/Credit card, businesses like this survive running cash-only.

Why do I do this to myself? After 4 hours on the Forbes Yacht (yeah, I roll like that) where I took it upon myself to sample every top shelf bottle of liquor they had, I stumbled down the dock and into The Park for some more drinking. Like I really needed that. The outside bit was hoppin with just about every table filled up so us rag tag lot grabbed the weird tree stump/loveseat, cowhide stool and leather benches surrounded by National Geographics that are in front of the bar. Seeing as I had already been drinking like a sailor (hehehe), I was transfixed by this odd decor. Particularly the tree stump love seat that I swear, kept changing shape. And as one of my buds pointed out, rather perceptively might I add, The Park reminded him somewhat of B Bar, but with a more woodsy vibe. I'd have to concur. Though I wasn't the one buying the drinks, from my cowhide perch surveying the land, I'd have to say the service was a bit slow as the front bar only had 2 bartenders serving a mass of thirsty patrons. We opted to get some bottles to share at our table so we wouldn't have to deal with the wait (which I bet was The Park's plan along. Sly devils) and as the night increasingly wore on, so did the amount of folks who rocked in - an eclectic mix I might add. I would have to say I'd probably enjoy it more during the day for lunch and sitting at one of the tables outside, or if I'm ever again conveniently stepping off of a yacht, but given it's so far West and away from most of the nightlife, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to hit this place up. It was tough getting a cab at the end of the night, too (just throwing that out there)
