I have to admit that I was thrilled when I heard that Jean Georges Vongerichten was expanding his worldwide empire to an outpost for Spice Market here in little ol' Atlanta. I had one of the more memorable meals of my life at the Meat Packing District outpost of the Spice Market in NYC, and have extremely fond memories of that meal. So I was prepared to be disappointed based on reviews here and elsewhere when we booked a reservation for a group of four. Given that it was a last minute thing for a Saturday night, we could only get in quite early. We were prepared to be annoyed as we walked in to find only one table filled. Luckily for the manager, who would have heard from us otherwise, the place was pretty filled in an hour. By the time we left around 10-ish, it was a bonafied *scene*. Cops, bouncers, and $250 minimum tables on the outside deck of the co-located W hotel made for a wholly different atmosphere than in the confines of the Spice Market itself - so be prepared for that, for better or worse. Service was attentive most of the time, although as others have noted, the purple mu-mus for the men are silly. I felt so out of place wearing my yellow one (kidding!). The women's version is only slightly better. They do have a design problem with parts of the establishment - we sat at a very long table where the wait staff had to reach over those seated at the edges to deliver and remove plates. Kind of silly. And simple things - like topping coffee or wine glasses - was overlooked for longer than I'd like. But what about the food? In a word - yummy. The one dish I was salivating over having that I remembered from the NYC location was their black pepper shrimp with sun-dried pineapple. Best I can tell, there is no other dish I've ever had - or can frankly find in a few pages of Googling - which uses this ingredient. I'm going to go out on a limb and call it unique, perhaps inspired by some odd dish JG found on his travels in Asia. And for me, unique in this case equals very good, and frankly not to be missed. We had the chicken somosas - which were very savory. I rather liked the cilantro yogurt dipping sauce others have commented on. The kumquat chicken had the right blend of crispy skin from the grill, sweetness from the kumquats and spice from small peppers strewn about. Our table loved the cod in malaysian chili sauce with basil. As we were leaving, we noticed that the dish was featured on the cover of one of the cookbooks on display - and by golly, ours looked pretty much a mirror image of that photo. The fish was perfect, with a pronounced flavor of chili to complement the fish. One slight dissapointment were the spicy Shanghai noodles. Not really spicy at all - other than by the crisped garlic slices - the dish really only provided a counterpoint to some of the more flavorful dishes on the table in terms of a cool texture. All in all I would recommend the place highly.

Decent food overall, but the macaroni croquets are the only thing on the menu that score points for uniqueness. The evening would have been even more enjoyable if we hadn't been required to clear out for the second show. Don't sit in the booth nearest the stairs; the temperature there is at least 5 degrees lower than the rest of the room.

Anachronism - a person or thing that is chronologically out of place (especially one from a former age that is incongruous in the present). Webster Hall - where anachronisms are found in abundance. I'll start by admitting that one of them was me!  The crowd at Webster Hall is young (perhaps 23 average), ethnically diverse and despite the $30 cover and pretty expensive drinks, decidedly middle class.  No need to worry about dressing up to go here.  I, on the other hand, left 23 in the rear view mirror a while ago. I wasn't the only anachronism though!  There, in the front dance area, were a bunch of young twentysomethings dancing up a storm to 80s pop and disco that came out when they were in Pampers.  The music was decent to good, but it was too dark and loud to converse - for that you had to move to... ... an area on the right sort of like a diner out of the 50s (complete with tables and a booth or two) that had some food as well as drinks. Upstairs they had a Latin music and dance area, which seemed to have the best ambiance, not to mention very attractive and attentive bar staff. The large dance area opened at midnight and had a trapeze (unoccupied, at the time) and impressive light show.  Z100 was hosting and the music was sort of top 20 dance music.  In the basement there was a very hot and crowded hip-hop area. To be fair, this wasn't my music and wasn't my crowd.  With that said, the place still seemed unremarkable even if it was your music and it was your crowd.  The main pluses were the variety of music in the four areas (where is the trance and house?!) and the sheer size of the place.  Plus the aforementioned attractive bar staff. If this sounds like your kind of place, do visit their web site - I found a link to printing out a coupon good for free admission, and there were other discounts as well.  Enjoy - and in a few years I'll see you over at Cielo. p.s. This was on a Saturday night.
