I absolutely love the 20's decor and theme of this gorgeous bar.  The waitresses are great and the bartenders are generous. The absinth girls are a great touch.

I've eaten a lot of Salvadoran food, in the States and in El Salvador, and of course I've eaten lots of Tex-Mex and Mexican. I wasn't impressed with Gloria's, which is a shame. I agree with Tom B-- when the newness fades, they're in for some trouble. The interior is lovely, if a bit loud and echo-y. Good date spot, and when it warms up, the outdoor patio will probably be nice. The happy hour specials (all day Sun-Thurs, 11a-6p Fri) only cover drinks. Came here on a Saturday night to eat dinner and check out the salsa (dancing and live music.) We waited about 25 min for a table. The chips were cold and the salsa had to be bottled Pace mild; not a stitch of heat or flavor. The black bean "dip" was basically just refried black bean mush. The $12 ceviche trio was... meh. Two out of three weren't bad, one was scallops and shrimp and the other was orange roughy and shrimp. The third was shrimp, whole, in ketchup. Yeah yeah there was avocado, cilantro and onion in the ketchup, but still. Oh, and the drinks are crazily overpriced. $11 for iced tea and a rum and coke? The pupusas were quite authentic, just so you know I'm not entirely negative. Mmmm... little corn tortillas covering nice light cheese or minced pork, $2 each.. I'll just say I wish the pork had more flavor. Service was all right. Friendly, but not super quick on the refills of tea, salsa, dip or chips. Husband had the churrasco tipico. The chimichurri was yummy; the steak came out way overcooked (and was replaced by the manager with a properly cooked and very tender version, along with a comped dessert, on the positive side). The rice was unappetizingly plated (it was still in the cup-measure shape, yuk). The beans were the same mush as the dip, confirming my suspicions. The platanos were actually bananas; the Argentinian sausage was tasty. I had the camarones a la plancha and asked for extra grilled vegetables instead of the rice. I received tough overcooked but flavorful shrimp, more unappetizingly plated rice (looked like a little kid in the kitchen was playing sand castles) full of overcooked olive-green beans, cubed carrots and corn... and steamed vegetables. *sigh* Husband said the tres leches was okay-- wasn't a large piece, wasn't bad, wasn't great. The crowd was disappointing because it was overwhelmingly cougar-y; this is definitely no challenger to Copa when it comes to being a fun place for salsa dancing. The live band, Latin Fire, was from Dallas, and I hope they stay there next time. Their salsa was fine, but they played 2-3 merengues for every salsa, and they are no merengue band. The salsa lesson was taught well by Jose and Robyn, but afterwards it was obvious Saturdays at Gloria aren't for the dancers. Too bad, it would be nice to have a north Austin salsa alternative, and I do like Salvadoran food. Go elsewhere.

Harlot has potential, I'll admit that much. There's no cover, and I dig the modern-meets-medieval schwag (chandaliers made out of lanterns, framed cases of insects on the walls, and an uber-cool white-as-ice balcony area). Unfortunately, the negatives outweigh the positives. Let's review... ~ $700 table minimum? GTFO. That's $400 more than at most clubs. ~ Harlot is SMALL... like 1/2 the size of DNA lounge. ~ As Bonnie L. just reminded me, the music isn't that great. ~ Possibly my biggest complaint: the crowd is very vanilla and BO-ring! Everyone just stayed in their own little space, ignoring each other. BTW, this club has a one-girl-for-every-guy policy similar to that at Slide, so keep that in mind when coming in mixed-gender groups.
