by Solomon W. on I was really excited to finally come here for the 1/2 price pizza happy hour. Where else can you get good thin crust pizza for $7 a piece? Sadly, it took FAR too long for my friends and I to get our pizzas. We got there at 6:50PM, and quickly put in our order for half price pies. What we failed to realize was that there was a 12 PIZZA ORDER put in right before us!!!!! Thus, it took us about 1 hour to get our pizza. Well.. waiting pays off. In general, I was disappointed with the metal pizza oven... normally good pizza is produced by coal or wood burning ovens, but this one threw a nice surprise out. It produced a nice thin crust pizza. We ordered the White, the Sausage, the Chicken, and the Margherita. The White, Sausage, and Chicken were all delicious, but the Margherita left something to be desired. The White pizza had a nice olive oil and cheese flavor that was perfect with the light airy crust. The Sausage was perfectly seasoned, but could have used a fattier meat. Peppers were nice on it, though. The Chicken was the nice classic combo of zippy pesto, chicken, and red peppers. All in all, too long of an experience, but still solid pizza.
by J T. on What'll ya have...What'll ya have??? I'll have The Varsity thank you! This is the shout from behind the counter at The Varsity smack in the middle of downtown Atlanta. I've visited here about half a dozen times. Its huge, has hot dogs, hamburgs, fries, ice cream - drive up or dine in. The Varsity is an institution in Atlanta. I ordered two cony dogs with cheese and bacon, fries and a drink - even the guy behind the counter was a little wowed by the boldness of the fat-content request. The total bill was $10.10. I gave him a $20 and he asked if I had a dime - I said no and he said what do you have? "Lint" I replied. He said just keep it and I offered him a buck as a tip - he refused. I offered again and he just said no thank you but please come back - I will. A dime gets my attention. A dollar gets my allegiance forever. The reason to come here is not for the food - its fine. The reason to come here is because they've been serving this food in this way in this place for over 80 years. There is a vibe - people take pictures - there's togetherness and belonging just by being there with other like-minded people long enough to eat a burger and fries. And by like-minded I mean a respect for tradition and the past and those who worked and work hard to make it the kind of place that people want to come back to - let alone give back a dime in today's economy and refuse a dollar tip - I'm in.
by Susann Blockmon on Oh wow! I haven't been to MJQ in forever - but I do love it! It caught me really off guard the first time I went and walked up to this little shack that didn't look like it could fit 5 people. But the shack is just the entrance to this under ground club. It's an interesting feeling - like you're walking into this cave. It has great music, the drinks are o.k... Get a beer!!!! The people who go there are great and I've never met a patron that wasn't friendly!!!!!
