by Rebecca S. on I would probably have given this place a four-star review if I had been able to ride the bull. We got there around 9, were impressed by the awesome interior design and had high hopes when we sat at the bar. We ordered some delicious (but over-priced) margaritas and expensive Coronas; the bar tender was efficient but zealous and moved like he was on cocaine. After finishing my drink, I pumped myself up and made the trip to the bull - no go! There was a live band that was going to start playing right in front of the bull. I probably sulked. We ordered another drink and listened to the band. Despite the ambient music, I was a little nonplussed by their sudden "No You Cannot Ride Our Alluring Mechanical Bull" attitude and frankly, felt ripped off. The suggestion of grabbing a reasonably priced beverage at The Levee and then heading back here for a midnight bull ride was thrown out and taken. The rest of the night went as followed: Came back two hours later and were hopeful because the band was no where to be seen, ordered margaritas, approach the bull, were told "No the band is coming back for another set." We figured, how long can the second set be? They already played for two hours! Drink our margaritas, watch as multiple groups of 3-6 people approach the bull, get shot down and vamoose, finish margaritas, watch with increasing disappointment as the band looks like it is never going to stop, timidly approach the bull desk and ask if the band will stop before the bar closes will we be able to ride the bull? Get shot down. Head home with our heads hung low. My advice to consumers? Call ahead and see if they are offering live music. While the band was good and I imagine they will continue to select unoffensive live entertainment, you won't be able to ride the bull at all, all night, No matter how determined you are. I do plan on going back because I will ride that bull, but am still off put by the live music. It's not a venue and it doesn't have a dance floor, so why deny people the bull? Especially if you are going to charge so much for liquid courage.
by Brendan Nearing on I love bowling. I love wine. Usually these things don't go together, but somehow 300 New York makes it work. It's an upscale bowling alley...so I could enjoy a glass of Cabernet, and bowl at the same time. Sweet! We were seated in the VIP area, because there weren't any regular lanes open. It was on the pricey side, but I thought it was well worth it.
by theo n. on Now that FIrst Street's getting it's makeover, it was only semi-packed on a Saturday night. Yes there's still the ten dollar cover, but with my recession wit I turned it into a two for one dealio. There was a rocker billy band and matching crowd on that night, and the redness still seeps into everything; air, clothes, drinks, and eyes. The vintage furniture provides a eye-catching opportunity to kick up your feet, and possibly indulge in some TLC. but beware. This is actual furniture from the First Empire of France, and rumor has it that Napoleon himself devirginized and defiled these antiques. So watch out for those lumps and bumps on the cushions.
