In the entire history of drinking, I don't think I've ever seen anyone get a refund on cover.... Came here with a few buddies on a saturday night.  This place is completely black outside and you would never guess that there was a bar inside.  Oh the irony...since its called 'shine'.  Not sure what they were playing, but it was definitely not hip hop. Cover was $5, but it was completely empty at 11pm.  We stayed there for all of 5 minutes because of a change in plans.  Honestly I'd give this place 3 stars based upon the vibe of this place and a completely stocked bar.  But the 4th star comes from the fact that we were able to get our cover back by asking the cashier nicely.  Sweet Deal. Anyway, there's plenty of street parking on 9th and Mission.

Overall, the grandness of Tao is impressive. I was thinking they must pay a lot of rent as I gazed across the massive space. Went here for my third and final restaurant week dining experience (Ok maybe I will go to one or two more, you never know.) I came in expecting small portions and generic food. What I received were generous portions of high quality food, presented in a creative way. To top it off, service was attentive. I started with steamed vegetable dumplings. The dumplings were light and flavorful. Entree was salmon served with udon noodles. It was presented on a raised dish. The ginger seasoning was just right and unlike many times I have Asian inspired salmon, it wasn't too salty. For dessert, I had a simple scoop of sorbet, not even sure what flavor it was. I enjoyed the fresh berries, lychee, and black sesame seeds that accompanied the sorbet. All-in-all, I would go back, especially if given the opportunity to do a business dinner at the long table in the upper level, which, unfortunately for Tao,  most likely won't be happening any time in the near future for me.

My favorite place for Salsa dancing. I usually go on Monday nights, where for $7 you get two hour lessons starting at 7:30p (beginner and intermediate) and then the DJ for the rest of the night.  Fernando, who teaches the beginning class is pretty straightforward, and his partner Mimi does a great job at explaining why we girls have to look pretty while dancing.  I have a big crush on Orlando, who teaches the intermediate class, but despite that, he's pretty soft-spoken and gentle in his teaching. Monday is pretty low key (just what you need to start off the work week), and they are cool with having the water jug and plastic cups out so you don't have to ask.  But because they're so cool about it, I would encourage you to buy at least one bar drink...for good will. I've also gone to Cocomo on Thursdays and Saturdays, which are more crowded nights.  On these nights, they also have lessons, but only the beginning lessons.  But they also have live bands. And for the standard club cover charge: $10 on Thursdays, $15 on Saturdays. There was one Saturday where we decided to have dinner at the club.   The food was was good, but comparable to a picnic BBQ buffet where the food was all homemade.  On the night we ate there, we had grilled chicken, rice, various veggies, maybe there was a bread roll (?) on a paper plate with plastic forks.  I don't remember it being too expensive ($7 maybe?), and the night was nice enough that we were able to sit outside in the patio to have our meal.  But it was not conducive for dancing after because we finished our meal feeling like we smelled of BBQ, our fingers and mouths too greasy from the meal. Still, the best thing I like about Cocomo is that it never feels like a meat market...everyone is there to have fun, and my guests and I always end up having a great time (save for the snotty older women in too tight dresses who are stingy about sharing their seats over in the corner of the club).
