This is for the "Mile High Club" Section of Busby's, went here on a Sat night, 11pm. Ok, maybe I am not qualified to write a review for this place. Why? Because I am not "really" a "club" person. My idea of a good time would be playing with my dog, reading a book while sipping whiskey, playing computer games OR partying like there's no tomorrow at somebody's home or mine NOT A CLUB or the like. Having wrote all of the above, I am still going to review this place just because I want to. If your idea of a good time is getting drunk, dancing, sweating like crazy in a place with other similarly drunk, sweaty people, then this is it! You would enjoy rubbing shoulders, backs, sides, whatever with the sweaty guy/girl next to you. They should really limit how many people they allow inside, one more thing, the air conditioning is non-existent, you will be sweating even if you're just chilling at one of the lounge chairs, it's THAT HOT. It's actually MUCH cooler at the smoking section. The only saving grace for the evening was our nice server "Kate" who was very attentive, patient, understanding and prompt. And I almost forgot, music was okay.

I only go for Tigerheat, of course, which is the biggest gay night in LA and I wouldn't be surprised in the country too. Tigerheat is 18+ and costs $10 to get in, although there is a VIP section called Heaven Lounge in the other side where you don't have to pay. Heaven Lounge is 21+ and the only glimmer of Hollywood night exclusivity you'll see in the gay world. The drinks at the Avalon are extremely weak and overpriced, about $12 on average and they measure out the fucking shot! On the other hand the small bar at Heaven Lounge provides normal pours so if you wantt o drink and not spend a fortune go there. They do have $3 drinks before 10:30 but dont bother, they use the cheapest stuff possible - think popov and orange juice. The Avalon facilities are pretty nice as are the staff. Parking is a hassle, $20 next door, or $10 if you walk 2 blocks away. Street parking is virtually impossible to find. Tigerheat is always jam packed, large number of straight guys and girls too, definitely a predominately under 25 crowd (and suspiciously some under 18 too). Also a lot of teenagers who think they're the hottest thing in town. The latest hits in pop music are played here, so if you want to stay on top of things, you'll hear songs at Tigerheat months before they become #1 on the billboard charts.  The way the crowd works is that Tigerheat opens at 930, is virtually empty except for high school kiddies till around 11, and by midnight or so it's at full capacity. Then it starts dying down around 2, and closes at 3. If you hate getting shoved around by big rude teenage girls from the eastside, this aint a good place to go. There is an alleyway you can chill out and smoke, and an upstairs to lounge and watch the dance floor if you get tired of dancing. Heaven Lounge also gets crowded (see, it's not that hard to get in!) and the crowd there are generally the "West Hollywood scenesters" (who are of all backgrounds, ages, and looks). It's a scene here but it's a fun one if you don't take it too seriously. Never been to Avalon on any other night of the week.

The line from the door taking you underground, past  the coat check and gentlemen wearing suitcoats and fedoras, is usually a little too long for my liking. Thank god I've got my boys Jason and Saleh on my side. I don't even usually need to say anything. I give them a nod, I hear "What's up D?" from them, and the red rope opens. People waiting for the occupancy level and openings to change whisper, wondering why they pay cover and wait, while I waltz right on through. Maybe it's the many nights I've spent outside, talking with Jason about real life, his jobs, and traveling. Or maybe it's the times when I really was the only nice person to Saleh, not being rude, and actually tipping my door men in order to make sure that they, not just me, could also put food on their tables tomorrow and a roof over their heads. Back in the day, well maybe not "back" in the day, but when it first opened, I used to be one of the only white girls in there. Shakin' my ass like it was on fiyah, and bringin' it to the floor like no one was watching. Getting up on the blocks next to the D.J., I would get down to my dirty deep beats of hip hop groove and forget that anyone was watching. Maybe that's because I had thrown back four martinis already, but I like to think that it's because I'm underground, can feel the bass through my torso pulsing, and love the crowd just getting heavier and hotter as the night goes on. These days, there is more of an ethnic diversity, bringing the likes of many types to this small venue just a quarter block off of Union Square hidden under the Campton Place side street. The drink prices are reasonable, but I warn all, watch your drinks, as I have found from unlucky experience that you can, like anywhere, get roofed and end up not knowing where you are in the morning, and not remembering anything. Some nights there is an eclectic hip hop crowd there, some nights a more trance house crowd, and myself I much prefer the first. For the latter, I prefer to hit other houses of music, different scenes, for I truly believe the atmosphere and layout of Vessel lends itself best to the urban sounds of hip hop. Sometimes it's a little too top 40 for me, but every once and a while it's fun to sing along to something you've been hearing for the past week while going home from work stuck in traffic. The smoking lounge in the back of the club is small, not well ventilated, and always packed with those attempting to get a new number they just scored clarified, punching them relentlessly into their Blackberrys and IPhones, considering the lack of hearing ability on the floor inside. Altogether a good place to rally and dance, as long as you don't mind the petite nature of the space, but I do like the bathrooms and the fact they've attempted to go upscale by having an attendant like in Europe or in the better Las Vegas clubs. On good nights, you'll watch my devilish swagger exiting the club, with a smile on my face, sweating and pleased from the power of the music over me that evening, excited to walk out, grab a breath of fresh air, and walk on in my city to the next spot about to capture my soul momentarily with an intoxicating beat and a hook that just grabs me.
