Ok, so I've gone to this club when it's dead, busy and overly packed.  You would think when it is completely dead I would not have much fun, but have been pretty lucky, the first time I walked in there with a friend after a rateclub elite party, with a good buzz, and no one was in there, but we figured go in for a drink.  The bartender was awesome, he chatted with us, answered our annoying questions, and continued to help us in our pursuit to get trashed.  The other times I have gone, the music is always pretty good, I enjoy the djs that they have and I like the crowd.  Once in a while it gets super hot and overly crowded, but most clubs do and since this one is more of a small bar club, I expect a little sweat in there.

Not only am I a fan of the show but I am a big fan of Kevin's take on food.  It was such a treat to get to taste some of his creations.  From the top down the staff treated us like we were the main guests.  Aside from all the hype that surrounds being on the show the food, drinks and service were fantastic.  It was an experience that I will never forget.  I don't really have the utterance to describe the food in writing, but I would definitely recommend the five course tasting menu.  The highlights were starting with a "Fall Classic" cocktail; the deconstructed Waldorf salad amuse bouche; the diver scallops with a tomato risotto; the roasted quail with pork belly; the seared antelope with shredded brussel sprouts, and the chocolate crepe dessert.  Did you notice I mentioned all of the courses from the tasting menu?  So yes, if you get the chance, go try it and give Kevin and his team the props they deserve.

I had high expectations for my dining experience at XIV, so maybe it wasn't fair that Grace had set the bar so high. But I dare say I wasn't incredibly wowed with Michael Mina's West Hollywood eatery. I came here with three other cool rateclubsers to experience just one more DineLA meal (i'd been to 4 previously). The vibe is VERY Hollywood, so it's loud, a bit pretentious, with a tad more focus on the 'scene' than the food...at least in my opinion. I went with the waygu tatataki for my appetizer, which was seasoned perfectly and incredibly tender. I thought that the pickled vegetables made a good contrast with the beef. For my entree, I had the Jidori chicken tajine. The main themes of a lot of DineLA menus this round seems to be the abundance of Jidori chicken and braised shortribs, but I digress. The chicken was delicious and moist, and there was plenty of it. The vegetables were my favorite part, especially the dates. It added a comforting sweetness to the dish, which tied in nicely with the aromatic rice with almonds and golden raisins that the chicken was served with. There were even bits of chicken included in the rice, which added to the flavor. The portion was significant enough that the two of us that ordered it, had enough left overs for lunch the next day. This dish was good, but it didn't WOW me by any means. My biggest disappointment was the dessert selection. The nutella pudding didn't sound appealing to me (although, after trying the popcorn ice cream it came with, it was probably a good choice), so I got the signature rootbeer float with sarsparilla sorbet and chocolate chip pecan cookies. The cookies were ooey, gooey, and warm...but nothing that my own mother couldn't make....and she doesn't charge me. The rootbeer float was good too, but a little too sweet. I think I would have preferred a creamier choice for it's ice cream accompaniment because the sarsparilla seemed a little overkill. I hadn't intended on returning to XIV so soon, but I showed up again on Saturday night to pick up my credit card that I left behind the first time. D'oh! Oh, one of the highlights of sitting next to a drunk, rambuctious group of annoying people was overhearing one of them request steak sauce for the wagyu. It made our whole table cringe in embarrassment for them.
