I love this place as a venue, small, but with a lot of different "compartments" to it. There's the lower level open area with the stage, and then then the second level which is set pretty far back from it that includes a lounge area with curtains. In the back, opposite the stage, on the second level is this glass-walled off area. It's dark just like the photos, but ads to the coziness. All drinks at the sow I was at were $6. Pricey, but whatever. Yep, the bouncers can be jerkish, but aren't they everywhere (it was a couple minutes to 2:00am and my friend and I were walking towards the bathroom when a bouncer snatched the bottle out of my friends hand without saying a word - jesus she could have finished her last sip).

I haven't been here  since the spring, but at the time it was so bad that I wanted to created a rateclubs account to write a review...I wound up joining just so I could say great things about Dynamic Dish down the street. However, my two really crappy trips to Cafe Circa continues to stick out so vividly in my mind as  complete wastes of money so I have to share. My first visit was for their weekday salsa lesson with some friends. The ambiance was really nice, the place was packed and I loved the dancing. However, it had been a rough day and I mostly just needed a drink. I ordered a whiskey sour, which cost me 8 bucks (which is what I was used to paying in NYC, but seemed high for Atlanta) and it came out ridiculously weak. Maybe because I was desperate, I ordered a second drink. Also ridiculously weak. I had only brought 20 bucks with me so I wouldn't spend more than I intended, so after two drinks I went home, completely sober. Spending 16 bucks (plus tip) for weak drinks in Atlanta soured me on Cafe Circa. This was actually the first time I wondered about proper etiquette for sending drinks back. Is that socially acceptable? I decided to give Cafe Circa another chance because I really wanted to like it - I like supporting both black and locally owned businesses, and I wanted to support redevelopment efforts in Edgewood.  I went in for lunch - it's a quick drive from where I worked. I ordered the two tacos. I wanted to have two different fillings, but they don't mix and match (which I found annoying), so I had the blackened tilapia. Aside from being a little too salty, the tilapia was delicious. However, the taco was not. It was basically the tilapia filet wrapped in a cold tortialla with a single spoonful of mango salsa. The salsa was too sweet and didn't really go well with the salty tilapia  Although the fish was juicy, the taco as a whole was really dry. I wound up opening up the taco, brushing off the salsa and eating the tilapia alone. The tacos came with a side of beans and rice, and just like the flavor of the taco was off so was the flavor of the beans and rice. Believe it or not, the beans and rice were sweet - and it tasted of plantains (which I don't care for). It's fine if someone wants to be creative and switch up flavors of very standard foods, but if you are, the menu should note these variances. It's like having a BLT on the menu without noting that the BLT is made with spinach, blue cheese and fried green tomatoes. It's an entirely different food experience. Maybe if I had been expecting the flavors of the meal because the menu was appropriately descriptive I would've been happy with the meal, but because I wasn't I was thoroughly disappointed. Lastly, I ordered fries, and my complaint about them was that they were exorbitant. i want to say they were 6 bucks, although maybe my memory is a little off. There was nothing special about the fries. They were your average frozen fries, probably from some generic food supply company like Sysco or something. The price wasn't on the menu (I can't remember whether or not fries were even listed on the menu, but I knew they had them because I remember seeing someone with some on my previous visit). If I had known the price I def. wouldn'tve ordered them. I would have considered frozen fries overpriced at 3 bucks (when I could get a large fry for 2 bucks from McDonald's), but 6 bucks was downright insulting. I really liked the atmosphere of the place, but I haven't been back since my second visit. I wouldn't order food or mixed drinks, so what would be the point? Maybe if I had friends who really really want to go there, I'd go and order a bottled beer.

OMG - I LOVE TAO. First, the decor of this place is absolutely off the wall.  You walk into the bar area and you think 'ok..its typical trendy new york asian fusion architecture' - but no wait...go a bit further into the dining area and look up - ah!  a ceiling with some interesting asian inspired characters hits your eyes and you're mesmerized for several minutes before you realized people are staring at you as you gawk. Look straight ahead, and boom!  A huge statue of Buddha (and I mean giant-sized huge) stares back at you - its absolutely exquisite! The DJ is playing really good light lounge music at a reasonable volume (meaning you can have a conversation and still enjoy the background music) as you eat. While some bars offer bowls of nuts, TAO offers wasabi peas which I appreciated b/c I love wasabi peas. We were seated upstairs which was fun because then you can see everything from top to bottom. Tao recommends sharing platters, so we shared a chilean sea bass small plate, lobster + shrimp dumplings, yellowtail sushi roll with crispy onions, and a smoked salmon roll.  I liked everything but the dumplings.  The Yellowtail with crispy onions was by far the best thing we ate. For dessert we got the chocolate melting cake with coconut ice cream as well as an ice cream sampler.  I chose green tea, red bean, and fortune cookie ice cream. The sampler was good, but too big - I definitely recommend sharing your dessert.  The melting cake was good, but I always get melting cake which is why I opted for something different. For the health conscious, they offer a fruit platter that includes the exotic asian fruit known as Lychee. This place is so awesome - and is definitely a great date-spot.  I recommend it highly.  I found out they have a lunch special - so I may have to make another trip there fairly soon :) Price-wise - we paid 45 each for all that food.  Which isn't bad for Tao.  Also, make reservations way in advance - this place books up and is great for locals and tourists alike!
