All I can say is epic. I don't frequent SF restaurants as I live in Sonoma County, and can't take the traffic, but I would brave the lunatic taxi drivers as a pedestrian to get these tacos. (Specifically the Baja style fish tacos...) Unfotunately, they were closing for a private party and we only had a half hour (make that about 10 minutes, they took nearly 20 minutes to prepare...) to enjoy and savor the tasty taco-liciousness, but it was well worth the wait. At $4.00 a taco, Nick's is pretty pricey compared to your run-of-the-mill taqueria but it's certainly not outrageous. The tacos are filling, and I left satisfied. If you're from outside of SF make sure you stop here. If you're from SF, I can't believe you haven't been here yet.

"Thank God I wore flats instead of heels," I thought as my date and I navigated the cracked, crumbly sidewalk north on Piedmont Ave.  We had just finished dinner to celebrate my birthday and the Riesling I sipped earlier begged for more liquid company.  It was a Wednesday night and we knew it was too late to get on the guest list of a popular nightclub.  So we decided to try a little spot called Kat's Cafe since it was half a mile away. We arrived to our destination at the intersection of Piedmont and 10th, just on the edge of one of Atlanta's legendary Piedmont Park.  We had to look twice though, as Kat's Cafe is neatly tucked right under a swanky hair salon. As we walk down to the entrance, we're met by two guys sitting by the door.  "Do you need our ID?" I ask.  They reply no. As we enter the cafe and pull up to the bar, I notice a casually-dressed lady lost in song as she sits atop a stool while a man strums his acoustic guitar and taps his foot lightly. The place is empty. "Oh.  They're just practicing for tomorrow night's show," said one of the guys who had come to the bar to serve us.  Kat's Cafe is known for live music (Latin, jazz, soul) and apparently Thursday night is their most popular. "You guys JUST missed the happy hour crowd," He said as he wiped the bar off and handed us a drink menu. I ordered their specialty - Lady Sings the Blues - a blue martini that was well mixed with hints of pineapple.  It was fitting since the lady, who I had come to learn was Kat, was singing a melancholy Latin song.  I looked around the cafe and noticed that there were two larger rooms on both sides of the main room.  A fireplace in the main room was filled with lighted candles and more candles lined the bar.   Jazzy paintings hung on the wall.  Even though we were the only two people there, I still imagined a similar cool vibe even when the place was packed. At one point the bartender Mike, who was Kat's husband, heard me telling my date about how much I loved Top Chef and I wondered if we could watch it on the giant plasma above the bar.  Mike overheard me and without hesitation slid me the remote.  "Turn it up," he said with a slight grin.  A few moments later Kat came over to introduce herself.  "Is my husband making you guys watch this?" she joked.  "He loves this show." Not only did Mike decorate the place, but he's also responsible for the majority of their menu.  Ask him about the Friday night happy hour and he'll tell you about the amazing all you can eat crab leg special for $8.99 plus the $5 martinis.  Ask Kat about upcoming performances and she'll excitedly tell you (in her laid back way) about how she booked a popular jazz violinist and that it's "a joke" that he agreed to come out. My friend and I drank, talked and laughed.  Kat and Mike were really cool and make you feel like you've known them forever.  Although we came on their "slow" night and didn't get to try any food, it was the perfect way to end the night.  "I'm definitely coming back," I thought to myself while walking back on the cracked, crumbly sidewalk. A stray cat started to follow us. "Yeah, definitely gotta go back."
