Lots of younger crowds came here the night I was at Temple.

For a bar with peanut shells on the floor this place sure does have a lot of rules.  where to sit, where to stand, where to order drinks, from who, and how to express appreciation of music. My second time here I was with a big group for a birthday, and as big of a class Kevin Bacon fan as I am, this place was terrifyingly similar to the plot of Footloose.  No Dancing. Now, i get that it might not be the space for a full on Hoedown, but to be yelled at by some glorified cafeteria line monitor every time my step had a little too much pep was just ridiculous.  I cannot count how many times that night someone in our group got scolded for too much movement, standing on the wrong side of the rope, or standing on the wrong side of the rope.  This guy was out of control and way to aggressive.  I felt like I was being corralled by the secret service.  he shouted, cursed, threatened to kick us out every time we got up from our seats to greet friends. That said, this place has so much potential and great music--music that generally makes you want to dance, or shuffle your feet at the very least--which you can't do.  But the laid back facade of peanut shells on the floor is deceptively misleading.  nothing laid back about this place.  at least not on the weekends. I had much better luck here on a Wednesday night. And by the end of the night by bill seemed to have several extra beers I don't remember drinking.

Underbar is by far my favorite spot in Boston, as far as clubs are concerned. I honestly can say I've never had a bad time. Sure, there have been issues at the door, admission cost, etc. But in general, I've always had an amazing time. The music is fantastic - the resident DJs are great, and the famous DJs who come through are great as well. The drinks are expensive, but hey, it's a club. The layout is great - there are two different rooms, the biggest being for house. The smaller being for latin/merangue (sp?). The crowd is diverse and not too pretentious, although the bottle popping internationals can be douches occasionally. Go Go dancers and random people playing bongos during some trance track during the night are common, but not in your face. Don't bother getting there before 11 - it's absolutely dead until 11:30 PM, and then like a flash mob, it's packed. I think alot of the negative reviews are from people who really don't go out that much to clubs, or in general have ridiculously high standards for a club in Boston. I could say alot more, but you get the idea. If you're looking for a club that plays excellent house/techno/trance, has great dancing, good looking/diverse people, strong drinks, then Underbar is your spot.
