I go clubbing about once every 6 months. And I never go unless it's a bday party or a friend can get us in without a wait (or a cover charge). Would I just show up on a random night and pay to get in? Not a chance. Come on. Everyone knows that the LA club scene is all about being an "attractive" girl or guy willing to spend, spend, spend. Otherwise you're gonna be stuck outside the club in some line that doesn't move. So completely disregarding the likely hassle of getting into the club if you don't have some sort of connection, my experience at Playhouse has been outstanding. Mostly house music on the nights I've been (Saturday nights). The ratio has been about 2 girls for every one guy. The most amusing part of the experience is when every few minutes someone will throw a stack of napkins in the air to "make it rain." I'm sure this came from rap videos, but it's pretty classic to see stacks and stacks of napkins being thrown in the air above the dance floor. Drinks are pricey (again, it's a club, you should expect that). Bathrooms are small and crowded. On Saturday nights there's usually a bathroom attendant who's selling the typical faire (gum, cologne, paper towels) after you finish your business. There's a bar upstairs that's much less crowded than the one downstairs and they have different music upstairs as well (if house music isn't your thing). If you can skip the line and the cover charge, fun times can be had.

Pros: 1) Nice crowd even @ 3 AM on a Thursday Night 2) Good Drinks 2 + rather attractive bartenders 3) Good looking, well dressed crowd 4) Nice mix of hip-hop and dancehall 5) Matrix of rooms makes for a unique club experience 6) Pole dances Cons 1) Long wait in line (thank god the gf is hot or we would been waiting forever) 2) Expensive Drinks 3) Not a huge dance area (VIP is way to big, its not that serious, your not that important)

I just reviewed this on the Academy of Sciences' main listing, but since half of my comments related specifically to the Nightlife event, I figured it made sense to do the review here, too. I really like the new California Academy of Sciences. I've gone four times: once on a Saturday, once on the third Wednesday of the month (when it's free), and twice for their Thursday evening "Nightife," which is restricted to people 21 and over. I love the rainforest, which I call the "Hall of Butterflies." I love the Planetarium. I love the living roof. The aquarium is amazing, though a bit overwhelming -- there's so much there! The African Exhibit is fairly dated (I remember it as a kid and it hasn't changed), though I really like the living penguins. I like the albino alligator but miss that the old Academy had half a dozen or more when I was a kid. Be sure to go early and sign up for a timeslot at the Planetarium as soon as you get there, because it sells out quickly. That's happened to me both times I went during the day, and one time to a friend who went for Nightlife. All in all, I have to say that I prefer Nightlife on Thursdays over the daytime experience. I like that there aren't screaming children (though there are plenty of shrieking adults). I like the deejay music. However, the bars are pretty expensive, small, and weak. The first time I didn't drink at all. The second time I stuck to wine because it's hard to dilute that. It's only $10, and that includes the Planetarium (if you sign up in time). So even if you don't have time to see everything you want, and you have to go again, the $20 for two visits with the Planetarium is still cheaper than $25 for one (plus another $10 for the Planetarium during the day). At Nightlife, they have three Planetarium shows. My impression, having caught the first and last on different nights, is that the first is a movie (narrated by Sigourney Weaver) and the second two are lecture presentations. Both were good, but given the two I would recommend the movie as a truly amazing experience. But also note that the rainforest lets the last person in at 8:30, so don't dawdle. And the living roof truly needs to be best experienced while there's still daylight. So it may be hard to cram everything at Nightlife ... but it's still cheaper to do Nightlife twice than once during the day.
