I'd heard rumors of a new mixology-oriented place opening somewhere on the east side a couple of weeks earlier; as soon as I walked in recently, appraised the liquor selection and noticed the veritable phalanx of Fee Brothers bitters bottles on the bar (say *that* ten times fast!), I knew this had to be the place. As soon as I saw that the specials menu featured an Aviation mixed with creme de violette, it became obvious that the bar had a serious pro behind it. The Aviation is a pre-Prohibition cocktail whose original recipe called for Creme de Violette. The problem is that this key ingredient has been nearly extinct for around 40 years now, when its original producer discontinued it, and thus up until now most modern recreations of the Aviation called for simply gin, lemon juice and Maraschino liqueur. Creme de Violette was reintroduced to the U.S. in 2007 by a company called Haus Alpenz, but has only this summer made its way to being formally distributed in Texas (and TABC laws being what they are, it's dicey for bar owners to serve forms of liquor not available through Texas distributors). Anyway, this whole Aviation/creme de violette history, as well as its recent introduction in Texas, is the kind of thing only a mixology geek (like me -- and like award-winning mixologist Bill Norris, who already has a nearly identical Aviation on his cocktail menu across town at Fino) would know, so I knew immediately the Show Room would have some serious cocktails on hand. That they did. A "pisco fuego" with pisco, lemon, St Germain (a fairly new elderflower liqueur now wildly popular in mixology circles) and "Angostura brulee"? (which, although I didn't ask, I assume refers to the egg whites seen in a traditional pisco sour whipped together with Angostura bitters) A Pink Pony with bruised cucumber, Aperol (half-strength Campari), dry gin and grapefruit? Both total originals as far as I know. I only had time for one cocktail that night (the pisco fuego, which was excellent), but I'll soon be back to sample the entire menu. Ohhhh, how I will. I'm giving the Show Room four stars instead of five only because they're still getting their footing in terms of service. My food order, a lamb/goat burger with duck egg on top, arrived without the egg. Worse, it arrived about 10 minutes before our cocktails. Complicated drinks can take lengthy amounts of time to concoct, and even on this relatively slow Tuesday night, the bartender was running way behind. I'd say the obvious solution is to hire a second bartender, but I know this might be cost-prohibitive for a startup business. At the same time it will prove an increasing detriment as this place -- apparently open barely a week -- gets more crowded. Which it will. I'll also echo a sentiment of one of the members of my party that the place needs more comfortable seating. Right now it consists of vintage schoolchairs and what appear to be wrought-iron seats made by the owners. Personally, I'd recommend adding some cushioned banquettes to the mix, as they are much more conducive for a lengthy evening of chatting and imbibing, the kind of thing the Show Room is clearly intended to foment.

Mediocre inauthentic expensive Mexican food.  I have gone here a few times for department lunches, and have had a work holiday party here as well.  It's the kind of Mexican food I can make at home when I throw things together using tortillas, meat, rice, and cheese.  Actually their salsa is really good, it's like a puree.  The food is decent, and the portions are huge, so it is satisfying in a certain way.  But I'd never go here if my coworkers didn't pick it. I do have to say, though, it is decorated beautifully.  It feels like a majestic Spanish castle inside, and the gigantic tiled wooden tables are nice.  We all really liked sitting in here.

This is the only bar in Philly that I go to religiously.  Probably because all my friends do  and I know everyone who works there.  So this is, undoubtedly, a  biased review.  JB's = my second home.  Great beer, excellent food (now with fatter fries!!) and the best damn music in the city.  Period.
