ah, webster hall.. i spent so many thursday nights there as a college student ... free drink tickets, free admission...free freak shows each time! the wet-willy and wet-tshirt contests will either have you dying on the floor with laughter or barfing.  either way, memorable for a lifetime. what have i seen?... pale ass East-Euro immigrant squealing in a foreign language on stage for wet Tshirt contest, buck naked, dancing around with her TAMPON STRING dangling around...hairy gorilla of an Asian guy (reminded me of an exiled samurai), on stage for we willy contest, hands on his hips, proudly showing off a curiously STAINED pair of tighty-whiteys to the audience... in sum, absolutely the ugliest, trashiest people in the world will be found here.  the place smells like a musty basement.  the owners are the Addams Familly (doo-doo doo doo snap* snap*) still, great though in its own yucky way, as it is 1 of the ONLY PLACES IN THE WORLD  to offer FREE ENTERTAINMENT FOR WOMEN!!  that is very thoughtful.  they actually have decent-looking, buff, dumb-as-[their]wood, male dancers. gr80s, salsa, hiphop, house, they got it all. HIGHLY recommended for hicks, tourists, sheltered teens, new immigrants, and the homeless.

Excellent atmosphere, disappointing food. You are immediately taken in by the open layout and dual bars, one inside and one outside. Day atmosphere is pleasant and relaxing with a variety of music playing on a beautiful patio complete with shade, sun and fire if weather calls for it. Couches make outside seating even more appealing. As most places, the evening sets well as fire dances on the colorful patio making for an initially highly hopeful experience. Sadly, this quickly disappears as you realize they obviously are out of their league as nightclubs & restaurants go. Chips & salsa are complementary, colorful, and delicious. Unfortunately it is the highlight of their menu. The food is tasteless, over priced, and incorrectly called "Mexican". Both the shrimp ceviche and the calamari were tolerable, which is the nicest comment I can make. The tostada salad was touted as their favorite dish. Neither the chicken, beef, nor shrimp could save this pathetic attempt at a tostada. It was served with ranch and scattered black beans on a bed of iceberg lettuce. The best part of the tostada salad was the flaky shell. The "marinated" chicken is misleading. It lacked any sign of preparation besides a few sprinkles of pepper and being cooked. The burrito met the basic criteria to be called a burrito but lacked any real flavor. The chile verde was a disaster. It was green "sauce" over white meat pork chop chunks. The salmon was edible, largely due to the lack of flavor by ingredients actually allowing me to enjoy the salmon flavor itself. The drink menu leaves you wanting. You would never know this was a Mexican restaurant with its pitiful tequila choices, or that it was a nightclub with the rest of it's alcohol variety. The service was exceptional. Eager to make sure you were taken care of and satisfied. Quickly served and offered choices it was a pleasant experience with the staff. The valet is laughable at the price of $20. Do they think they are on "Sunset strip"? Besides the pleasant atmosphere and attentive service, I find it hard to find any reason to visit this overpriced mockery to Mexican cuisine or it's awful attempt at being a nightclub.

Go to Tao for the ambiance!  We went on a weekday afternoon, in between rush crowds, so we didnt have to deal with any of the problems i've read about with waiting for a table. I had the most wonderful time.  Even without the 'asian theme' this room is spectacular to sit in . The room is enormous, completely open and about 4 stories tall.  The walls are all bare brick, with industrial staircases and mezzanines.  The top floor is a private room with a long table overlooking the entire scene-- emporer style-- and its very beautiful.  At the opposite end sits a four story tall buddah in a coy and lilly filled pool, and yes it could be tacky but its not, its fun and its pretty and its unique and the super high ceilings made it possible to have music turned loud enough to create ambiance without disrupting conversation.   Really a great vibe all around.  Supposedly the mens room design is worth a visit to check out the river rock sink and the waterfalls, but the ladies room was pretty standard. The food was really good, although I'd steer away from the sushi.  Its not awful, but  if you're used to great sushi, this isnt the place for it. The chinese food is great, and there are lots of yummy small plates to choose from-- i cant remember everything we ordered but the dumplings and the crabcakes were both delicious.
