After 2 years of coming to NYC and trying to get in here (without a promoter) and getting rejected, I finally was granted access to what I had hoped would be one of the best clubs of the city. Man, was I let down. First of all, apparently the party is here on Sundays because the door was a s!@# show. Have you ever watched a line of ants walking, and then taken a stick and messed up 1 part of the line so they all just scatter and chaos ensues? It was just like that. I was with a promoter, and 3 very pretty ladies, and I literally had to hold on to him, and hold on to my friends, until he basically squeezed us through a small gap in the crowd to get in. Just insane. I couldn't imagine trying to come here without knowing someone. Then, once inside, it was honestly nothing special. The people weren't exceptionally good looking (although, they're trying to hide that fact with lots of expensive goods and general douchey attitudes), the music was good but nothing I haven't heard before, and the space was just like any other club. It was alright, but not crazy, and if I hadn't been with my best friends it would not have been a fun experience. And, I was with a promoter who had a table in the VIP. So, you'd think once you were inside you could just relax and you'd be taken care of. But no, for whatever reason the security for the VIP area was only letting in 1/2 of my promoters people, which is ridiculous. So basically, there wasn't only a filter at the door, there was a filter for people once you were inside the club as well. I'm clearly okay with being judged to a certain extent, hell I've been rejected there and kept going back cause I don't take it personally, but really if the promoter has a table it is absolutely ridiculous to only grant access to some of his guests. Will I go back? Nope. No need. Too bad it took me 3 years to realize that!

We went to the Sunday brunch show for a friend's birthday.  The food was classic hotel buffet food (the eggs were a little under done) but screw the food, bring on the drag show. I have to say this is a GREAT drag show!  Amazing lip sync, beautiful bodies that any woman would kill for, hilarious outfits and song selection, extremely fun, and the MC has the most beautiful voice when she sings.  Yes, they are men in drag lip syncing to songs...but you let yourself go along for the ride and they are amazing performers belting their songs out just for you. Having been to drag shows in NYC, London, Spain, and now SF...this is the best I've seen.  Seriously...they are gorgeous and talented.  As a confident straight man I gotta tell you, I'd buy any of these ladies a drink and see where it goes.

I was so poised to find this place cheesy, as I like to pretend I'm "over" the whole sceney thing (especially because sceney + SF tends to equal poser).  I mean, growing up in LA, I did all sorts of stuff I shouldn't have when I was way too young to be doing it, and consequently got tired of clubs by the time I turned 21. But secretly, I still like swank, design-y nightspots like Harlot, IF they are done right.  And Harlot is.  I like the gothic, perverse sexiness - very appropriate for a good-girls-gone-bad night out with the ladies. So I've gotta try that.  Because this time, I came here for a work event at happy hour.  It was hosted upstairs in the VIP section with an open bar, so that was great, except Harlot doesn't exactly have a happy hour vibe.  But no matter.  I contentedly sipped my well-mixed elderflower cocktail and pretended it was 11pm. What legitimately blew me away was how NICE the doormen were.  All of them.  Smiley, seemingly genuine - never has a doorman made me feel so welcome.  And I wasn't even wearing a boob shirt (coming from work, I rocked the complete opposite - button-down, almost no makeup, and sneakers). Can't do five stars, cause I didn't get the opportunity to judge the real (ie nighttime) crowd.  And a few signs did point to sleaze - namely, the group of short/old/balding men that slithered their way into our party.  But future judging is imminent.  I have high hopes for this one.
