I had a really great time at this club! We were visiting SF for the weekend last winter, and it was recommended to us (and also happened to be walking distance from the hotel). After hearing that one needed to be a female and wear pants for the slide, I passed up my usual ho-dress and wore jeans. We only waited in line for 10-15 minutes and the bouncer talked and joked with us. There was light drizzle that I wished they had some sort of awning or shelter from. Finally, we got in, and with no cover! + 1 star. $2 for a coat check. The slide was fast and scary; they let my guy use it too, as well as other girls in ho dresses. Who knew? Inside the club was dark and classy, with old school chandeliers and big chairs to lounge in. I guess it used to be a speakeasy and looked like how I would imagine one. Bartenders were pretty laid back and served me some damn good long islands, but those are pretty hard to mess up. The DJ spun a mix of current and old school hits, and we had a great time dancing. Loved the location of this place, the look of it, and the non-pretentiousness. I'll be back!

I just spent one of the most disappointing and non-happening nights that I can remember. I went to see a Brazilian band. The first few hours were spent on a sound check (which they never did get right), the band played one song, did another sound check and then walked off the stage. There was zero audience in the place (I kept waiting for them to show up and for the band to begin--which never happened.)The kitchen never opened. The staff was not particularly friendly. I was talking to the singer at the bar. She ordered a drink and walked off. Without so much as asking whether she was a friend, or if I were willing, the owner announced to me that he would put her drink on my tab. Most of the staff were fairly snippy. At the end of the evening, the owners only seemed concerned about getting my payment, no apologies for the lack of anything, etc. No offer a drink to make up for it, NOTHING but a bill for the wine I drank only to keep myself somewhat amused while I waited. I am usually a generous tipper, so it is very unusual that I leave less than 20%, but I felt foolish even leaving the 9% which I did. In conclusion:  I will NEVER go back.

Basically a lot of what I'm going to say has already been said -- Ella is a cool place with a speakeasy vibe to it, nothing spectacular about it. Biggest pros are that it does tend to be a pretty attractive crowd (last time I was there I ran into a bachelorette party, did not complain about that) but on a Friday night it gets waaaay too packed and the DJ just isn't that good. Definitely going to make my way there mid week to get a better feel for what it's like based on Daniel R's post
