by Cathy Y. on taco tuesday definitely colored my experience, for the worse. When I arrived at around 7, the line for ordering tacos was already snaked across Nick's/Rouge and out the door. Which wouldn't be a terrible thing, only we never seemed to move....which may be true, as there was nothing delineating what was the line and what was just people hanging about. After way too much time in that line, I finally order my chips+salsa+guac and carne asada taco, nick's way. I get the chips immediately, which are a great deal for $2. Heck, I would probably pay full price for them! The chips were thick and had the satisfying crunch of a deep-fried tortilla. The salsa was cool and refreshing, and the guac was smooth and creamy. I have no idea how the staff is able to match up orders with the numbers we had. There is barely any room to walk around in there, yet they somehow found us and gave us our tacos. For $2 it was a pretty good and very filling taco, but I'm not sure it was worth the wait, nor do I think I would come again to buy at full price.
by Loyd Newball on Just celebrated a delightful birthday dinner at Woodfire Grill and was especially excited to support their farm-to-table approach to gourmet dining. I love the way the menu clearly sources all of the elements of their meal, as well as the atmosphere of the restaurant, elegant and celebratory without feeling stuffy or pretentious. Thanks to rateclubsers suggestions, we started out our evening with the very delicious blackberry bramble. I decided to be choosy and pick out my own courses: pan seared diver scallops, wood grilled painted hills strip loin and roasted curried delicata squash. The scallops were definitely the highlight of my meal, and as it turns out the highlight of my hubby's 3-course tasting menu. I enjoyed the squash as well (at the waiter's suggestion), but didn't really feel it paired well with my other entrees. The curry was strong and spicy, and while delicious -- I would have preferred something less dominant. For dessert, we shared the white chocolate cardamom tart. It tasted as good as it sounds. Can't wait to celebrate another special occasion at this restaurant.
by Wilber Ishikawa on I grew up in NY but somehow had never been to Webster Hall. A Cali transplant friend of mine wanted to check it out so off we went on a Friday night. We did a few laps and checked out the scene. Hip hop on the main floor, 80's revival downstairs and techno upstairs. (Walked up some back stairway to the techno room, it was filled with 100 TVs broadcasting what can only be described as seizure inducing images that must also be used by the government to torture people) The crowd was ridiculously young and the guys complete sketchballs. All that and expensive drinks! I love to dance and this place sucked any joy right out of it. Needless to say I will not be going back. Ever.
