Been here three or four times on Penn's dime.  Consistently underwhelming, hype over quality.  Lunch the other day was ramen soup, which was not as good as what you get out of a 59 cent bag -- inedibly salty, with dumplings that had clearly gone straight from the freezer to the microwave. I'm with the school that thinks Stephen Starr is net drag on the Philadelphia food scene, occupying the high end with a loud soundtrack rather than good food.

Ugh...where do I start? I reserved the "VIP area" for my birthday last year. The so-called VIP area is located on the 2nd floor, far from the dance floor. The hostess walked my party to the 2nd floor. On our way up the stairs the hostess stops all of us and asks me "Did you pay? You guys cant go up until you pay" Which then she just stood there until i paid---in the middle of the stairs!!! I should have known this was the beginning of bad service and bad night. So we get to the "VIP room" its was dull and no music playing. I mean come on' a dance club without music? WTF? After the champagne toast (which BTW its the ONLY service they offer in VIP--) . Since the VIP areas was so boring a few of my guests wanted to go downstairs to dance, but the waitress blocked the stairs until we tipped her. I told her not everyone was leaving and I was still planning to hangout, but she said no one is allowed to go downstairs until she is tipped. Then she had the audacity to stick her palm out and wait for her tip. Even though she was the rude on, I felt so embarrassed! I tipped her ,so my guests wouldn't be held captive. Ooh believe me...it just gets worse. The waitress gave us wrist bands that was suppose to give me and my guests unlimited access to our paid vip-room. An hour later my guests complained to me that they weren't allowed to The VIP room anymore. I thought there was mistake, so I went to speak to the bouncer and showed him my wrist band...which he informs me that management decided to close it because there wasn't enough people hanging out in the VIP area, so they sent the waitress home. WTF!!?? Throughout the whole night I kept on complaining and demanding to see a manager. The manager didn't come speak to me until 1:30am. Which was useless, because he said threes nothing he can do. So, after my b-day I spent the whole week calling the Highlands, complain and making multiple threats. Finally management gave in and gave me a refund. Seriously---worse birthday ever. If you've made it this far, thanks for listening to my rant! Bottom line: Service is HORRIBLE, drinks are overpriced, music is awful and the place is filled with wanna-be. But if that's your thing.....go right ahead and visit The Highlands
