We came here on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend and were super excited to check out this new spot, especially since we're a big fan of Mina's OC restaurant Stonehill Tavern. BUT... it all started to slightly go downhill the moment we stepped in. The ambiance was upbeat and lively and the decor was very Starck-ish. Our reservation was for 9:15 and we arrived at 9:25-ish. The hostess said that they were waiting for some people to finish up and if we'd like to grab a drink at the bar while they get our table ready. No problem. We grabbed a drink (a Grey Goose tonic and a straight martini - both well poured). After a few minutes we spotted Mina behind the bar and said hi - nice guy! We continued to wait and realized it was almost 10pm. I don't remember ever having to wait this long for a table (unless we didn't have a reservation). There were several hosts walking around the restaurant but they all looked confused. We asked the hostess when we could expect to be seated and she said the same thing: they were waiting for the people at our table to finish up. We went back to the bar and decided to order one last drink before hitting the road. We noticed that everyone around us were also looking impatient and apparently had also been waiting for a while. The confused hosts continued to circle the restaurant nervously looking at tables - we even noticed them telling a party to leave because they were just lounging. We started to get really impatient and grabbed one of the hosts to see what the deal was. He was all flustered and said he would get us some food to hold us over until we would be seated. We weren't too thrilled about that but whatever. He brought over some ahi tuna and crispy rice dish that wasn't bad. When it got closer to 11, we decided to give them a piece of our mind. We went up to the hostess and went off about how ridiculous their service is and how we drove all the way up from OC and this is the service they give us? Immediately all the hosts surrounded us and and apologized saying they would seat us right away and that food would be waiting for us at the table blah blah. We completely lost our appetite at that point. They brought over champagne and Mina brought over some caviar dish (Michael's Caviar Parfait) saying "I'm so sorry about that - you're in my hands now..." Ugh. But being the foodies we are we had to try the food. They brought us the ahi tartare - not a fan - it's too dry and a bit salty. It's the same receipe as the tartare at Stonehill Tavern. Anyway, we decided to go with the 8-course meal. Here's what we chose: 1. Tataki of American Wagyu Skirt - Delicious. 2. Alaskan Halibut - Too salty 3. Kobe Burger - Very yummy. The bread was soft and the beef really tasted like kobe 4. Filet Mignon - Very good 5. Sea Scallops tempura - One of the better dishes 6. XIV Cheese selection - nice as an after dinner treat 7. Branded Bananas - WOW. the jasmine ice cream was amazing and the cashew shortbread balls are soooooooo good. the waiter said people actually ask if they can buy them. They're scrumptious. 8. Nutella Custard - Definitely custard-y. It was delicious except for he passion fruit foam on the top which ruined the entire thing.. I just pushed it aside and made sure it didn't touch the rest of it! All in all, the wait for our table brings down my rating significantly... but Michael Mina's hospitality was pretty sweet... and the food was OK. Oh, as a side note, while we were waiting for our table we checked out the terrace and it was hot, humid and quite honestly it looked like a sports bar lol. Wouldn't want a table there...

Oh, Morimoto, you are a restaurant after my own heart. What won it for me... before I even ate the food, was the absolutely wonderful and attentive service. I am a vegetarian and my order reflected it... but I never mentioned it to the server. She noticed, asked if I was vegetarian, I said yes, and she brought me out the vegetarian soy sauce. You are the best. The food was outstanding. I finished the bowl of edamame all by myself. Simple yet satisfying. My seasonal maki rolls were filled with fresh vegetables and fresher seaweed. And my bamboo steamed vegetables.. who knew bamboo could make asparagus taste so good? My dining mate ordered the teriyaki chicken lunchbox special and fell in love. Oh... and please save room for dessert. The chocolate pot de creme was outstanding. Melt-in-your-mouth-delicious-give-me-more-to-go-ho me outstanding. The decor is swanky. I really felt like I was eating somewhere special.. and of course, I was not let down. Now if I can just figure out how to transport Morimoto to Chicago...

Morimoto was very hyped up.  I was very disappointed with my experience there.  I was pursuaded by my dinner date to order the $80 tasting menu.  It consisted of all fish.  However, all the fish dishes did not flow.  They did not have a theme (other than the use of fish) and did not taste good together. I usually like fish but grew tired of it all by the end of the dinner. The decor was pretty unique.  Very contemporary.
