When my friend invited a group of us foodies to dine at XIV with a 40% discount, how could we refuse? When we go out we order everything on the menu we want and eat it family style so we can optimize our visit. It's unfortunate to go to a restaurant that's supposed to be really good and have the diners at the table say, "It tastes like McDonalds." I'm not exaggerating either. If you don't believe me, try the "chicken nuggets" or the caviar parfait. I know what you're thinking, "How does caviar taste like anything from McDonalds? Well, try that too and you'll see the hashbrown that those delicious eggs are served with. Overall, a good place to try and cross off your list of things to do, but don't repeat... Just go to McDonalds.

Stopped by for lunch today (my second visit, first time was for dinner) and thought twice about the Omakase and pulled the trigger.  Got the cheaper of the group and it was a five-course deal. 1st, Hamachi tartare - some interesting texture in it, as the chef put in minced garlic, some scallions, crunchy tempura flakes (I think), sitting on a bed of soy sauce type vinaigrette.  the soy sauce isn't overpowering the fish taste, it's very light.  this dish was tasty. 2nd, Mackerel - can't recall exactly how it was, but it was sliced raw mackerel sitting on some oils (one was a carrot oil), with some micro-greens, and bits of reduced shallots and possibly ginger.  Having the mackerel alone with some oils on it and a bite of greens didn't taste well at all, had to be eaten with the reduced shallots and other guys.  the fish itself is really dense, almost a rubbery consistency.  not the best of the group, probably put this in last place. 3rd,  Cured black miso cod - this dish was my favorite of the five.  the fish had such a GREAT taste to it, served with some black beans done in some way and pickled bell pepper skin.  the cod has to be eaten with the black bean and pickled pepper to fully get all the taste and texture out, really good. 4th, assorted nigiri - surprised when this came out, thought it'd be another hot dish, but no.  random cuts of fish, can't recall what they all were, but not too happy with this one, should've been something else, then again it was the cheaper of the Omakase. 5th, mint fondant sitting on a piece of chocolate mousse - this last piece was really good.  the mint fondant was excellent and putting it in the mix of the chocolate was even better.  the bottom layer was some sort of crumbled up chocolate.  if it's on the regular menu, I recommend this dessert, again, most excellent. Not apart of the Omakase was a spicy tuna roll.  Not mouth-watering, but not disappointed.  The tuna was really fresh though and you can taste that, but I wish they had a little more spicy mayo in it.  The black toasted sesame seeds really brought another taste to the roll. Would go back to try the dinner Omakase.  Can't recall what we had for dinner a few years back, but I do recall the entrees and rolls eaten were well worth it.  I see that many are complaining about the time of the foods arriving to the table.  Today was just fine, but then again, it was 12:00PM on a weekday.

3 nights in a row...not really by choice, just different events going on..but each night got significantly better.  The inside is dark, orangey shades of color and cramped.  The dancefloor can get crazy packed, elbows flying, watch your face.  The VIP tables are spacious and open, good views of the dancefloor.  I've yet to actually go down the Slide, which is very disappointing.  It's rarely open!!  The staff unfortunately haven't been the friendliest the nights i've gone, except for Jaime the doorman. he's ultra cool. you'll know him by his supercool mustache =) Depending on what the event is, they are sticklers for you being on the RSVP list..otherwise it's $20 cover, WAY too much for such a place. Fortunately, I'm on top of RSVP'ing and have never had to pay a cover, even though one time they didn't have my name on the list!! I was able to find my confirmation email on my bberry and got in that way. The best seats are the ones right behind the DJ booth in my opinion because they are raised slightly higher than the dancefloor and you can dance up on the "stage" right behind the DJ.
