A rare find in the Castro:  A Cozy, warm, intimate wine bar.  Sans flamboyance. I dig it. Lovely ambiance.  So quiet that you can actually carry on a conversation!  Choose from a great selection of wines, then sit at the bar, a table, or one of the never-want-to-get-up couches.   And oh yes, they have nibbles. I'm no wine snob, so I totally appreciate an establishment with such a low-key and friendly staff...Not to mention that it's walking distance from my house ;)  (Which, by the way, has no bearing on my 5-star rating!).

This place is a loud sports bar with an enormous Orwellian Telescreen nightmare playing like 15 different games and races. Its actually kind of neat. I needed a place to eat with my Dad before a movie at the Metreon. We didn't want food court fare so we stopped in here. The hostess was clueless and told us to take any table without a table cloth (WTF?) We did just that and were promptly told by a snotty server that it was reserved and we had to get up. We argued our case and she seriously sat us at an identical table right next to it (the original remained vacant fort he duration of our meal). Whatever. This was the second time I have eaten here. the first time I had the burger. It was good, but hardly Rateclub worthy. It certainly doesn't rate on my burger list. This last time, I had the Jerk Steak and mashed potatoes. I had my low expectations totally blown! The steak was juicy spicy and tender. Perfectly cooked. Pops ordered the pizza. Equally impressive for a "mere sports bar". The Caesar salad was standard. I think I might pop in here sometime and watch the races. Its not bad.

Make no mistake- this review is for 330 RITCH, not Popscene. Yes Popscene is their big draw every Thursday, but there is more to this club than just the desperate 18 year old hipster wannabes, the buzz bands (and lack of pre-sale tickets) and the-do-I-have-to-listen-to-Franz-Ferdinand's-Take- Me-Out-again / same-playlist-every-Thursday music. This is for 330 Ritch, a club that has tough-as-nails bouncers (be nice to them, they're nice to you), nice bartenders, and cool decor.  If you stop by during the rest of the week, they have varied dj nights, from goth (Shutter) to hip hop (Spindig Happy Hour).  Sometimes bands play there; I saw L.A. band Oslo there, and the vibe was definitely different on a Monday night.  Their bathrooms are relatively clean - when it's not populated by drugged-out patrons - and there's lots of tables / booths, not to mention easy parking.  After Giants games, you see baseball fans having a drink and a pizza.  It's definitely a place to hang out, non-Thursday. So please, don't confuse 330 Ritch with Popscene.  The bar is way better than that.
