Oh East Side Show Room, how I truly wanted to make you my new spot. With your totally unique and old school parlor-esque drink menu, and your deliciously Manhattan haute-cuisine menu, at first glance I thought I had possibly breached the gates of heaven. Alas- your service, horrible attitude, and disappointing drinks make me wish rateclubs allowed a half of a star. I feel that for such a bad review (I have never bothered to even write a review of a place if I felt they deserved less than three stars) I must explain the experience I had there. On the night of Halloween my roommate, our neighbor and I decided to grab a drink and a bite after a very long and exhausting day of working and moving to our new place (no celebrating for us that night). After much discussion we decided upon East Side Show Room. We'd all heard fabulous things, and thought it would be a great place to unwind and get into the wicked Halloween spirit. At first glance Showroom seemed more than perfect- clean and funky decor, yummy smells wafting from the kitchen, and patrons aplenty. We were seated instantly on their back patio and were given menu's. We immediately started drooling over the interesting cocktails and appetizers. Yet when our waitress showed up after a long ten minutes of waiting (no water, no greeting), we were given a fairly nasty cold shoulder. Maybe it was because we weren't dressed as hooker pirates or dirty nurses. She took our order, and then carded us. Here in laid the problem. First off, you should know that we all more than look our age, which is legal. But we understood the law. Our neighbor, a 26 year old mother, had lost her drivers license the week before, but had a birth certificate, social security card, credit cards, and even a STATE ISSUED ID with her picture. Our snotty waitress (no, I'm not being biased here- she honestly never smiled once and had the worst attitude of a server I've had thus far in Austin, which is saying a lot), told us that for non-license identification she had to bring the manager out. Fine by us, just bring us those mouth watering drinks! So the manager shows up, and again no smile, no greeting, nothing. Just another nasty cold shoulder. She inspected my friends multiple forms of ID, only to decline her. When my roommate pointed out that she had a state issued ID with a picture, along with said birth certificate, she responded with "I can figure that out myself, thanks. The words City of Austin are on the front, and I can read". Then walked away. If that wasn't bad enough, our waitress then reappeared to inform us that even though our friend had gotten declined, we still had to pay for the drinks since we had ordered them (even though they hadn't even came out yet). Even though we wanted to get the hell out of there, our friend told us to enjoy our drinks and then we could leave, so we begrudgingly agreed. And then we encountered yet another annoyance. One drink appeared 5 minutes after the interaction. But the second one didn't come for another FIFTEEN minutes! The drinks looked cute, but had little flavor, and about 3/4 of a cup of fluffed egg white. Not what I consider a great cocktail. We finished our drinks, and it took another thirty minutes to get our check and pay. By the end of our experience there we were starving, annoyed, and not even the slightest bit relaxed by their skimpy alcohol serving. We then wandered the block or two east to the Good Knight, where we had a fantastic dinner, more than pleasant service, and drinks to knock your socks off. In the end, I'd love to give Showroom a second chance, but it will definitely be a few months before I forgive them for their unprecedented rudeness.

Kitchy, overdone restaurant/lounge consisting of royal blue velvet furniture with disco balls casting sparkles on velvet walls, Day of the Dead velvet pictures and heavy wooden booths, just to name a few things including dim, dim lighting.  Just what you'd imagine what  Hollywood would be like if it had a mind of it's own, was on a Mexican acid trip and decorated itself! The food was good but I am more of a classic Mexican food type of girl and given my choice I'll take more true spicy flavors (like stronger use of chilis) instead of slightly Americanized Mexican food any day of the week. We came at exactly 6pm when the restaurant opened but since we didn't have a reservation we almost didn't get in even though the entire restaurant was empty. Ok, this annoyed me a bit. There's that attitude I have a problem with - It's 6pm on Saturday, the restaurant is empty and you have ample room for us but can't seat us in case someone "important" might need a table, or 20 of them. Right. They hemmed and hawed and then sat us at a table for four but then I guess decided we had the right cologne on or something and moved us to a booth - wow, I feel so special that you will accept my money AND you moved me up in the world to a booth, oh goody goody, thank you! We started off with red chips and two types of salsas/one bean dip brought to our table.  They were ok but none of the salsas were hot enough for my taste. As we munched the waiter tried to interest us in Tequila.  None of us bit.  He was a little too "on" for me and I kept feeling like he was pushing the Tequila however two out of three of us don't drink so he wasn't really getting anywhere  - so on to dinner and no drinks.  One order of Fish Tacos, one order of Chicken Tacos and one order of Nachos.  Two of us ordered salad to start. That was a very boring choice as the salad was very plain and didn't have enough dressing at all (orange balsamic which tasted like two oranges squeezed on top of lettuce). Dinner was really better. my Chicken Tacos were really quite tasty with beans, rice, potato salad (ok I know it sounds weird but it was good) and guacamole.  The chicken was slightly dry but flavor was good none the less.  Everyone else said their dishes were tasty as well and judging by the fact that my friend ate his ENTIRE plate of nachos I am guessing he enjoyed it. Each dish was $15 and you had a choice of many dishes for that price including soup or salad (Go with the soup). None of us had dessert but we were full and happy after dinner which is my definition of success. . . sort of. However, the next time I go to eat Mexican food I am going to the slums where I can feel truly welcomed, instead of a Hollywood Mexicali lounge that thinks too highly of itself. After all, at least I know that in the slums there will always be a booth waiting for me, the Chilis will be damn hot, and the most renowned person there will be the cook! **MY TIP: I tried the Tequilas after going back again and damn they are tasty - try the two for one. re-post from 12/31/2007
