People often ask me what it means to be a "Local Atlanta Celebrity." You'd think that would be an easy answer since I pretty much created the title, but it's kinda hard to put into words.  Most of what makes me a true LAC is being David K.  It's lots of intangible things that I can't give away, yet somehow only I possess... but I digress... The opening of a new venue in the space that was formerly The Gold Club creates a lot of buzz, so obviously I was on the guest list for their Grand Opening (actually, I'll go ahead and admit that I was someone else's +1).  Everything about this place made me feel like a celebrity. Photographers. Guest list. Champagne. Interesting people. Dramatic fire dancers. So, to help answer your question... having a good time at Gold Room is what it means to be a Local Atlanta Celebrity. Honestly, I didn't really expect too much. I figured they hosed down the floor, slapped on a new coat of paint, and then used Wite-Out to update their liquor license. Thankfully I was wrong. Really wrong. They actually got it right. Kudos to whoever planned the guest list that evening because the crowd was PERFECT. Everyone was having a great time and the mix of people was amazingly diverse and consistently upscale.  Hopefully they continue to attract the right people. The experience inside is awesome. Lots of bars and lots of staff.  There were times when I wanted to be downstairs amid the busy people... and then when I wanted to escape I just went upstairs to sit and people watch behind the big glass windows. My only complaint is the mandatory valet. It's free (unlike Whiskey Blue... *ahem*), but I would prefer to park my own car.  I actually tried to pay to leave it in the parking deck next door at Lindbergh Plaza.  Unfortunately, that's not allowed and I was turned away by a MARTA cop and another guard screening patrons as they pulled up to the deck.

Pioneer Square = dirty Trinity = dirty? Well ...it's getting there slowly but surely I have had a few good times here, but all with the aid of booze. The place is laid out to be really cool, with a proper bar room, lounge type room and large dance floor room (3 rooms, hence trinity). Drink prices are a bit high, but multiple bars cool down massive lines. The crowd is 90% Asian or Indian. This is fine, but 90% of that crowd are dudes with a license to grind! The music is radio sponsored and a mash up of rap, country, and old rock hits. Like Middle School Dances, remember? You aren't missing much on this one ...

Update 9/15: So I went back, again, yesterday evening, and I have to reiterate (see below) that Slide can be "the" place to be with the right mix of scenesters and hipsters. I went with some good friends, but also met up with all sorts of VIPs and PIPs, from the press and media, to other club and bar owners, to just good people I hadn't seen in some time. Really good times - if Slide's promoters can keep this up, I can see the place being  - on those certain special nights - San Francisco nightlife central. ------- Ok, so I stopped into Slide last night, had to see what all the anticipated hype was about, and I right now I have mixed feelings. I'm giving the club 4 stars, when I'd probably be happier with 3.5 stars, but I'm also counting on the guys behind it to make nights their something special and to attract a cool and sexy crowd. In the end, the right "in crowd" is what will make this place, or turn it into "that club under Ruby Skye." When you enter, you just have to go down the actual slide. I went down it and the people who saw me at the bottom said I had this big grin on my face when I shot out into the bar. It's a real smooth trip, and definitely one of the highlights. Downside: at the bottom, the slide shoot is emblazoned with Red Bull branding. The space itself has been, for the most part, nicely done up. It's a little hotel-like inside, but again the right crowd can warm up any place. The bar is standard gorgeous, very nicely appointed, but when I go back here, I'll be sure to reserve a table. Almost all the wall space and then some is devoted to booths of various sizes, and it's definitely the way to take in the scene. There's a tight DJ booth set up too, which you can actually get real up close and personal with, and when I was there, a house band was also keep the beats in rhythm, a nice touch. Maybe it was for this big opening, but there were a bunch of saucy flapper girls carousing around the bar, and in terms of creating a speakeasy vibe, I hope they are a permanent fixture. While I liked the slide, I also was enamored with the digital underground screens that have videos of Union Square on them. They give the impression that you're peering from below ground, and I have to admit, it's pretty intoxicating to have as wall art. It's like the digital portraits at the Clift, you just have to go and check them out for yourself to full appreciate them! So why my hesitation on giving Slide my full Nish approval? Well, like I said, the people who go here will eventually determine Slide's coolness factor. Maybe it's a reflection of the Bay Area's nightlife scene in general, but the folks last night seemed more Bridge & Tunnel than Hipster Swagger, and in my opinion a true speakeasy, even as a theme and backdrop, needs some serious elements of smooth cool. I wanted to imagine Andre 3000, but the reality was more Diddy. Maybe I'm getting too old for this!
