I have been a patron of most of the businesses on Edgewood Ave for 2+ years, yet never darkened the doorway of Cafe Circa until about 2 months ago. First of all, until very recently, it had a very shee-shee, too-cool-for-school vibe. They did some re-branding when they opened the upstairs patio, and have done a bit better job communicating that it's a sort of causal place. Now past that attitude adjustment, I've gone to Circa for 1 reason and one reason only: Francine Reed. If you don't know who Francine is, you really need to look her up because she is a musical LEGEND. Anyway, Francine sings most Monday nights, and several neighbors and I listen, chit-chat and drink horribly overpriced wine. (A glass of Ravenswood is $8 per glass, as opposed to $6-$7 PER BOTTLE at Kroger.) It's also really depressing that usually, our crew is 90% of the people in there while Francine sings. I don't think they do ANY promotion for her, which they really ought to, considering the gem of talent they have performing. It could be standing room only if they put in a little effort. Furthermore, the service is deplorable at best. I've sat at the completely empty bar for several minutes before the bartender even looked up to notice I was there. I've never ordered food because my friends and other rateclubsers have told me not to bother. It's really obnoxious that they have flat screens in there, playing sports and sitcoms, while the rest of the atmosphere is classy, sleek and actually quite nice. This would be a one star review except that Francine is amazing and I'll put up with a crappy restaurant just to hear her. And then I'll go next door to Corner Tavern for affordable and delicious food and drinks.

The only reason I've been here twice is to see the Spazmatics on Sunday night. They are by far the most entertaining live band that I've ever seen! Another plus, is that you can probably spot some B-list stars here. My friend was standing next to Cyndi Lauper. The club itself isn't that great. The place is huge and cold. I don't like the club layout and the drinks are way too expensive. I doubt, I'll go back.. I don't do well partying on a Sunday night. I will check out the Spazmatics in Long Beach, on a Saturday night.

What a fun place to stop for a drink on the way to the theater. Over 100 tequilas...really?  Do we need 100?  The food was okay.  The atmosphere and soundtrack made up for it.  It's very LA.
