Ona's Music Room, A New Dimension in Live Musical Entertainment, Birmingham Alabama

When I was a little kid, I remember Mayes Oyster House as quiet, old SF restaurant that didn't serve water at the table because of the drought. Then it closed down for many years. The unlit marquis still towered in the shadows above Polk Street. Nowadays though, this area is where it's at. The Marina? Gone the way of the dinosaurs. The Mission? Psshhh...so 2000-and-late. These days, SF nightlife is all about Polk Street and Mayes is the place to go and dance. Until clicking on the website, I didn't know Mayes still served food. This spot turns into a bustling nightclub in the later hours. That said, it doesn't come without its downfalls. First of all, this place is a SWEATFEST. You will leave here a hot mess. Because of this you need to be pretty lit up already to be here, so the clientele is...what you could expect from that. As the night ticks on a line forms outside which is kind of ridiculous...this is NOT LA!! Bottom line though, I think SF needs a place like Mayes: a bumpin' establishment that plays great music and has tons of room to dance, without the frills of a pretentious club. They've put a lot of effort into the swank decor with a nod to it's old-school roots. I'm really happy the new ownership has a resurrected this SF staple into a place that all sorts of crowds can enjoy. May I add....I don't think Mayes should be filed under solely "Seafood"
by Katia M. on I went here a fair bit when I lived in Central Square, usually for lunch or a quick bite. The food was fine, but nothing special. Maybe if I was big into electronica, I could appreciate this place a little more, but truth be told, I'm no fan, and when I came here on a date for drinks and the music started up, it was so loud that we had to leave. So yeah, no real reason to come here again for me. I might mention that the service is some of the worst I've had, not just in Boston. It took forever to get drinks, order, get a check. I ended up having to go up to the bar and remind people, and that is so not me. Awful.
