We had Thanksgiving (2010) dinnner at The Prime Rib and were very pleased with the overall experience. We were seated at a small table against a large pillar in the center of the main dining room and several people bumped into the table while we were dining. The atmosphere is that of a 1940s supper club and the employees are well-groomed. The restaurant seems to attract mostly patrons over the age of 40, which is a welcome diversion from the usual. For starters, my sex partner ordered the grilled shrimp and I had the house salad. The shrimp was a bit tough and the salad was just lettuce and one tomato slice for $11. He ordered the turkey dinner and I had the vegetable plate. We were both extremely pleased with our entrees. The wine recommended by the server was a perfect accompaniment to dinner. We had to ask for more bread and during the dessert course, we weren't offered more coffee. The pumpkin pie was spectacular.

I had a really good time at XIV. For appetizers, the tataki of Wagyu was tasty. The presentation on the plate is so simple that it looks boring at first glance, but it's very juicy and flavorful! And the corn soup w/ pork belly was very satisfying. Frankly, any time I see pork belly on the menu, I'll be happy. But I'm telling the truth when I say the creaminess of the corn soup and the crispness of the pork belly went perfectly together. A very pleasing combination! Surprisingly, the portions for the entrees were pretty generous. It's usually not that way for dineLA, so I was caught a bit off-guard. Anyways, the entrees were all very good. I got the Jidori Chicken Tajine, which was a lot better than I expected. I thought it was going to be a mushy mess of a stew with dried chicken, but in reality, it was great! The chicken was soft and juicy, and the accompanying vadouvan sauce was excellent. I had a bite of the NY Steak, which was perfectly cooked and tasted very addicting. I was tempted to ask for more from the guy with the steak, but I didn't want to offend by depriving him of his treasure. What was also VERY good was the Moi. The waitress said that only 3 restaurants in the country serve Moi fish, whatever, I don't care. Fortunately, the taste was excellent, and the dish was straight-up phenomenal when paired with the St. Aubin "Sur Gamay" 1er Cru from the wine list. Amazinggg! As far as dessert goes, the ice cream was definitely the most memorable part. My nutella custard was good, but it was accompanied with POPCORN ice cream. I gotta say, the first few bites of that ice cream blew every synapse in my brain. The dessert wine they suggested to pair with the nutella custard was only OK by itself...too sweet for me. But, when paired with the custard, it was p-e-r-f-e-c-t.  I don't know who the sommelier is, but the pairings suggested on the menu were all home runs, so I think he deserves a sommelier medal (if they exist). Then, I tried the jasmine ice cream from the brandied bananas dessert, and then all those synapses fired again, for the second time. Very memorable! We were a party of 8 and got seated a little bit past 10PM. Service was pretty good throughout the night and didn't try to rush us out even though we were the last ones out the door, so that was nice. Overall, it was a great experience. $44+21 for the dineLA plus wine pairings for each course, so my wallet is pretty much traumatized, but I think it was definitely worth it.

I stopped going to Cat Club/1984 when I started seeing one too many white-with-colorful-vertical-stripes button down shirts. (You know what I'm talking about, the ones the bros get from AmericanAbercrombieEagleFitch.) The Marina invasion ruins everything it touches. It was good once. I used to dance my little heart out to fun indie/new wave/80's music and without worrying about being harassed by losers of the male persuasion on the dance floor. But now, yuk.
