The amount of hype made me want to give East Side a shot. I'm a sucker for an interesting cocktail. The descriptions of bad experiences here scared me, but I was not to be dissuaded! I should have listened though, because my complaints reflect what's already been said. I went with a companion on a Tuesday evening around 8:30pm and it was packed. I did like the Bladerunner-y victorian/art deco design, but I also felt a bit out of place. Perhaps my jeans were not quite skinny enough. It was loud inside and we were seated on the back patio....quaint but the chairs were uncomfortable, though the hostess explained the cushions had been removed because of the rain earlier in the evening. The only reason East Side gets two stars is due to the friendly hostess, who actually seemed concerned with our experience. Our waitress, however, was another story entirely. It took a while to place our order, and it took some time to get our drinks. The waitress barely made eye contact and didn't answer questions about the drinks well...which resulted in us getting a cocktail of Sazerac Rye (straight) rather than a Sazerac drink (with bitters and some kind of anise liquor). You'd think a venue specializing in drinks such as these might get them correct? Since we never actually saw our waitress or could get her attention to ask about the correctness of the order after that (except *finally* to get the check), we ended up finishing our (really pricey) drinks and leaving. We didn't see much reason for ordering round #2.

This is another one of those places that I really want to love - but I just can't.  2 strikes: 1 - They only have 2 tables that can hold big parties, which is an issue in an of itself... But here's what happened.  It was January and we were going for a friend's bday.  There were maybe 9 folks, so we had a reservation.  Since everybody wasn't there exactly at reservation time, another big group stole out table.  we waited TWO HOURS until that party ate and left, and we got the table after them. in retrospect, i have no idea why we actually stayed.  everyone was annoyed and restless by the time we sat.  Then the food was just mediocre, and our server was sooooooooooooooooo overwhelmed and slow.  i got something called "breakfast all the time" (sans the bacon) and it didn't taste like anything... but i was hungry (and tipsy after 2 hours at the bar), so whatever...  strike 1 2 - i went again this past weekend... the wait wasn't too long... the issue again:  the food. i mean seriously, you're a restaurant, shouldn't food be your specialty?? i got the bbq chicken pizza (sans the chicken)... it literally tasted like NOTHING... how do you mess up pizza? it makes no sense... i barely ate any, and had no desire to take it home for later... it wasn't even worth the calories... we got spinach dip too, which wasn't horrible, but it didn't really taste like anything special... i mean, the food is edible, it's really just not worth the money... steeerike 2! Unfortunately for them, I don't allow 3 strikes... sorry luckie! p.s. they have like a $20 cover after 9.... restaurants that make you pay to enter kinda upset me... p.p.s. the drinks are decent... come here to drink and meet sexy men (or women i suppose)... make sure you're good and full before you leave the house though... and get there before 9!!

Remodeled and horrible, horrible, horrible...  How can you not compare it to the predecessor?  There were a great number of reasons why folks loved the old venue, all of which are missing from the new venue.   The cool and roomy booths have been replaced by cheap tables and lots of bar stools.  While the back area and upstairs make the place much roomier than it was before - the bad music, sweaty people, tacky murals, and watered down drinks cheapen the entire experience. There's enough wannabe trendy bars that are infiltrating the Mission, why did they have to take over a tried and true, and very much loved place? And to top if all off, they were charging a cover this weekend! If I wanted to go clubbing, I would have paid real money to go downtown and see an actual dj.
