by J.M. C. on I have to admit I am new to the New York nightlife scene, but have been going out in places like Boston for years. A few weeks ago my husband and I tried to go to 1Oak and we told it was closed for a private party. I assume that we were just not the type of people they wanted there that night... boo-hoo. So I decided to reattempt to get in with one of my girl friends. We were dressed up and ready to have a great time. When we approached we immediately walked past a group of guys and were welcomed past the velvet rope- hooray success! We arrived at 12:30 and the place was still pretty quite. At first we almost left b/c we could not figure out what was so special, but right around 1:00 the place just filled with people and the music was fantastic. The drinks were a little expensive but the bartenders were quick and nice. We ended up staying all night and having a fantastic time on the dance floor. We even spotted some of New York's chicest celebrities dancing along to their own music. It was such a blast and one of those nights that makes you love this city all over again. The table service looked really good and I would totally consider having a party here. Tips: Go with your prettiest girl friends and dress up or you might not get in. Expect to spend a little money on your drinks. Plan to dance the night away. Keep a look out for celebrities (if you are into that kind of thing.)
by Keith M. on Walking into this bar is like walking into Tree's Lounge. I half expected Steve Buschemi to sit down in the stool next to me. While not quite as gritty as the bars Bukowski frequented, this bar bounces between being truly divey and a little lounge-esque. There is a nice array of couches, and some good pool tables, but place itself, well... maintence isn't really a priority, but I like it that way. And I still don't understand my friends' growing interest in having sex in the bathrooms of dive bars we frequent. Maybe I'm just a little more dsicriminate with where I'll have sex in public because the tiny, grungy bathrooms here certainly did not seem arousing to me. Then again I probably shouldn't talk. The girl I ended bringing to the bar was married and had her husband meet with us all. At least I didn't catalyze a divorce this time.
