If there was a 2.5 stars, I would have gone with that... but I went with 3 (instead of 2) because its my old neighborhood and it was a welcome change of pace when this place opened. DBar is a great little spot for the local "dorchester gay elite" to go and hang out and be Chatty Kathies, while pretending they are not part of the now defunt "south end gay elite." If you are not part of either group, or don't know someone on the staff at DBar, look out because chances are you're not going to get the best service in the world. Most likely your server will be leaning on the end of the bar with the other servers on staff that night, seemingly trying to ignore their tables. I'm poking fun, but there is some truth to this. I've been to Dbar more times than I can even think to count and every time i've been, I always walk away with the feeling that i'm an inconvenience for the staff there. The drinks are ok and over priced, same with the food, and the music is WAY TOO LOUD for dinner. Its like trying to eat and have conversation in an Abercrombie and Fitch. The decorations are cutsy and sorta work for an old irish Dorchester bar trying to be upscale posh. Basically its overpriced mediocrity that is striving to be better, but is falling short of the mark. Good thing gay Dorchester loves this and eats it up as it was a welcome addition to the dying scene in Boston a few years back. Hopefully with age, the attitude of the servers and the bar as a whole will start to improve.

You know in the movie "House Party" where they just walk into the room and immediately start dancing and high-fiving everyone?  This, my friends, is the Velvet Room.  Unpretentious, fun, wild.  Everyone's dancing and having a wild time.  The minute I stepped in I started dancing.  I usually need a drink or two to loosen me up, but not here.  The music (or shall I say DJ) was great!  He even played the Luke 30-minute workout!!!!  Say whaaaat!!!!  Hell to the yes.  I'm from Cali and I haven't heard the Luke 30-minute Workout since college, and that was 6 years ago.  True, it IS located in a shopping market plaza and when my friend took me here I was like, "Okaaay."  Double that when I saw an old couple walk up in line wearing matching purple velvet outfits.  I was at that point ready to leave.  But so glad I didn't.  We had soooo much fun.  Even got invited inside the DJ booth.  Hey now.  Funny story: I asked the bartender to make me and my friend a cape cod w/ belvedere.  He said that they didn't carry belvedere.  What kind of GD club doesn't have belvy?!  Anyway, my friend had never tried Ciroc vodka before so I asked the bartender if they had Ciroc.  He glanced at me for a looong time, kinda gave me the side-eye and said, "Yeeah.  We carry Ciroc."  What was his problem, right?  Later on, when I was looking at pictures I took, I found a picture of me and my friend posted right at that bar and lo and behold, right behind me was a row of Ciroc bottles.  Bottom line: had fun, got crunk, got drunk, the end.

Genki is one of my favorite places for real Japanese food.  Their sushi is fresh and tasty.  I love their Katsu Chicken Curry which comes with a side of vegetables.  Genki has two sides of the restaurant.  One side open for lunch and the other for dinner and drinks and watching sports.  And they deliver..... During lunch they can get busy.  There are valet services provided at Genki.
