What I've Learned Today: - I've learned it's okay to post a sign bearing an offensive comment as long as you include and place emphasis on the word "please". - I've learned that if a business engages in charitable acts and philanthropy, this makes it more aesthetically pleasing. - I've learned that merely visiting a sandwich shop and eating their food does not sufficiently qualify you to say things about said establishment or its food. Geno's can suck it. I would *gasp* go to Jim's before I went to Geno's! Ooops....I mean, Geno's can suck it PLEASE.

i think this place means well, but it's just not well-executed.  the upstairs venue looks a bit too much like TGIFriday's, and the food may be worse (which is a feat so incredibly hard to accomplish, i almost admire them for it).  when i saw a show here recently, i heard rumors that the P.A. burnt out before the show and they had to scramble to piece one together before the show started.  possibly as a result, the vocal sound was not that great (esp compared to the acoustically-perfect downstairs).  the layout of the venue is such that, because you are seated more for dinner service than a show, quite a few people have to twist around and/or crane their necks to face the stage.  i also had a $5 coupon but ended up not using it because it took so long for them to try and get a manager to sign off on it, i couldn't wait any longer.  that certainly wasn't my server's fault, but in the context of the rest of the atmosphere, it was disappointing that i had to pay full price for the food i'd been served.  i'm normally a pretty easy person to please, but unfortunately WCL feels more like a place where semi-hip suburban folk can have a swingin' night out but still enjoy the fried appetizers they get at their local applebees.  (as mentioned earlier -- the sound downstairs is exceptional, though)

SOMA is not my hood so this was a friend's rec...I was mildly impressed.  atmosphere was mod with a groovy eastern/saarinen theme.  teakwood & mellow lights, white columns & upholstery with terribly attractive staff & competent DJ...even if the tunes were diff interpretations of the buddha bar & hotel costes series. food was decent, but beautifully presented & surprisingly affordable.  I'm sort of surprised there were so few people eating.  we ran the full gamut of appetizers-entrees-desserts & it was all good...however, I felt a little rushed during the dessert.  I would have enjoyed another cup of their excellent coffee while my companions finished up their gorgeous confectioneries but it was obvious they were ready for us to leave. they transition to a nightclub at like 9:30...so they were clearing tables & bustling about while we were midway through dessert.  attending to their surprisingly few tables was obviously not a priority at that point. still, I'd go back.  it's apparently popular as a nightclub because when we left they had they had velvet ropes up & buff dudes at the door & a line down the block.  I thought that seemed a little much...but then I'm not 20-something & I'm over clubbing.  but I can recommend the restaurant as being an affordable evening out for four, with an interesting menu that they've put real effort into, a chef who's presents his food artistically (even if it's not exceptional) & a staff that's attractive & very capable. note...I'm wondering if they'd let you chill after dinner & that way avoid the line for when they transition to the nightclub.  be worth asking if you're into clubbing.
