You know...I am not a fan of fancy bowling places, but I was required to be here for a work meeting.  Who would have thunk?  Really?  Let's have a meeting in a posh bowling alley! Alas, not having any input into the decision, I was forced to oblige and be there.  Foodwise?  I can honestly say I was impressed.  The fried mac and cheese was excellent and so were the mini cheeseburger sliders. The service was quite attentive as well.  For a meeting of over 100 people, the food kept flying out of the kitchen and into our stomachs. The bar?  Again, for a fancy bowling place in Midtown, you must expect to pay higher prices.  But all in in all, a decent pour. Thankfully, I live around the corner, so all I had to do was have a few drinks and then run home to hit the bottle! And forget about bowling.  Not for me!

This place only gets 2 stars because the decor is very well done (in my opinion), the drinks are well made, and the DJ was good.  HOWEVER... here we go: 1) Whomever the owners are obviously have a hard-on for Club Universe as it once was... go-go-boys in white angel outfits???  Yeah they were hot, but give me a break!!!  There's a reason Universe had its day and its now gone... leave the past in the past please.  There's a reason it's in the past. 2) Does anyone who actually lives in the City ever go here?  I swear the crowd here is very UN-San Francisco.  I've honestly been dying for a swanky cocktail lounge to open up in the 'stro that delivers a premium experience but draws a traditional San Francisco crowd.  As others have stated on here, this place is trying to be some fusion between a bar and a club - and it's failing MISERABLY because of the small space.  Oh, and the crowd is so non-SF, probably East Bay kids that want to be so LA... sad :(  SF'ers are quite capable of doing premium and swanky - and it doesn't have to be LA-ish to do it... get a clue! 3) RIDICULOUSLY HIGH cover charge on weekends for what you actually get out of the experience. 4) If you're going to try for a premium experience, please be consistent.  One night I went back (the last time I ever will unless someone else is paying and I'm leashed and collared and drug in) the cups were PLASTIC.  WTF???!!! 5) EJECT THE DRUNK PEOPLE (mostly the overly drunk women) - they are seriously ruining things for everyone else around.  The other bars in the 'stro have gotten very effective at doing this.  Are you afraid those sharply dressed snooty bouncers at the front might get a little stain on their perfectly pressed suits??? 6) Stop playing the damn good music that makes you want to dance if you aren't going to provide a dance floor!  This place's schizophrenia (is it a bar?  is it a club?  is it a resto/bar?  is it a littering ground for drug paraphernalia???)  will be its undoing. I give it another few months before it starts to dearly suffer, especially once the across-the-street competition (which I've heard is also going to try and go more upscale) opens in earnest.  As someone who does marketing for a living, I can tell that whomever owns this place has a selfish dream - that isn't backed by any real market research.  Unless they modify their formula quick, this is going to be one expensive failed experiment.

I fought Adam over coming here and it turns out I was wrong. This place is awesome. Unlike others here, I really liked the food (though the plantains were slightly overdone, but the main dishes were excellent, perfectly spiced and plenty to go around) and the girlie drinks were great. Sitting outside on a warm summer night made me want to go to Senegal. If I could add a sixth star for the hot, sweet guy who served us, I would. Sometimes I really am wrong about things.
