by Seth B. on I give it four stars, but with one huge caveat - know what to expect. 1. This is NOT a club. Sure it may say it is, but it's NOT. So don't expect a hot MPD club on the UWS, it's a basement with a dancefloor and a few bars. 2. Their DJ music IS pretty bad and inconsistent. 3. I live a few blocks away, so definitely points for convenience; 4. I came here on a Friday night, from 9pm to 11pm they have a live Latin band which was well worth the $10 cover and a ton of fun. I recently spent some time in Habana over the New Years, and a lot of their dance 'clubs' are in regal but old buildings, you go into the basement and there's this amazing band playing music and couples in their 20's and older doing salsa dancing that blows away some of the better dancers even in NYC. While not exactly the same, on the Friday night I went, Columbus 72 had a similar vibe - live music which was actually pretty good (similar to SOB's), lots of people dancing, and a fun time - different from your typical NYC dancing experience, but I think in a good way. Certainly a few negatives - drinks are a rip-off ($12 for a beer??? Get them at Malachy's across the street or Bin 71 for wine), and the live music ends by 11PM and I wouldn't recommend staying fo the DJ. Overall, great place to go dance for a few hours on a Friday before going somewhere else - we had a lot of fun dancing - but take it for what it's worth.
by Cris L. on There's many great venues in SF, and though I haven't been to this one nearly as much as to the Fillmore or the Warfield, I like this one the best. This is not about the artists that play here -- the Fillmore gets the bigger names -- but about the venue itself. The gorgeous, intricately decorated wood paneling is so impressive, it's almost difficult to pay any attention to the musicians on stage...
