The Italian and I attended a friend's private party here and we loved it.  The atmosphere was hip, loungy and very chic.  Velvet green and gold was everywhere - curtains, couches, etc., and we knew we were going tohave a fun night ahead of us. I was impressed with the people there, who all looked like they walked out of a magazine, but without the unfriendly pretentiousness one would expect.  Everyone was surely dressed to the nine's and did not leave any details out as they wore their best.  So remember to look the part if you plan on coming in because it seems like they choose the best dressed to come in right away. It really helped that we didn't have to stand in the long line with everyone else either, or pay an unreasonably high and over-priced cover charge.  While we are on the topic, please be prepared to pay at least $15 to get in, and that's on a slow night.  The line is long, and it's very easy to get impatient as I noticed in the short time I waltzed by with The Italian. So when you're hunting for a place to hang out on a weekend, The Green Door is a good choice to make!  It's a guaranteed good time. (NOTE: One less star for the lack of bathroom stalls.  Total of two people!  Will these nightclubs ever learn?)

(disclaimer:  I've been in SE Asia for the last ten weeks so everything here tastes bland compared to the freshness and complexity of herbs, spices, chilies, lemongrass, garlic, ginger, basil, mint, and other Asian  spices that don't even exist in North America.. can anyone recommend a Laotian Restaurant ?... do they exist in SF?!) That being said:    This place gets a solid 3 stars. The food is FINE but I prefer Axum in Lower Haight .  The portions are tiny for the price. TINY. Unless, of course you get the "all you can eat special." We got the Veggie Combo and the Meat Combo plus the Collard greens. The spicy Chicken Stew was fabulous but the portion was miniature.  I would most likely survive never having anything else we ordered ever again. Plus the service was just kinda stupid: We ordered drinks and food at the same time.  Our food came. and then we waited, and waited, and waited.... til our drinks came out.. FIFTEEN MINUTES after our food (?!) They weren't complicated drinks either: 2 Sierra Nevadas and bottle of Ethiopian beer.  Our friends who met up with us half way through the meal went to the bar to order their own drinks (no server to be found) and returned before our first round ever arrived! hmph. We ate here because it's a block away from The Independent and convenient... But if you're just looking for good Ethiopian, Axum is much better.
